VMware updates its Tanzu application development tools

Computer virtualization software provider VMware Inc. today announced a number of updates to its Tanzu application development tools.

VMware’s Tanzu portfolio is a collection of tools used by developers to build and manage modern applications. They were officially launched in March, when VMware Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger said it would help the company to provide the “ubiquitous, central infrastructure to enable our customers’ digital transformation.”

Now, barely a month after that initial release, VMware announced that Tanzu Application Service 2.9 is generally available. Tanzu Application Service was previously known as the Pivotal Application Service, but was rebranded after VMware acquired Pivotal Software Inc. for $2.7 billion at the end of last year.

The new version expands the number of workloads that can run on the platform. For instance, it’s now compatible with many .NET applications, the company said.

The second product to hit general availability this week is Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, which provides a runtime for customers to install and run multi-cluster Kubernetes environments on any kind of infrastructure. Meanwhile, Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated Edition 1.7 also launched with more configuration options and security features.

VMware also announced beta availability of TAS on Kubernetes, which integrates elements of Pivotal’s version of Cloud Foundry, which is used to spin up cloud-native applications, as well as Istio and Envoy. TAS for Kubernetes has a much smaller footprint than the regular version of TAS, providing more flexibility in terms of where it can be run, the company said. For example, it’s ideal for organizations that want to run TAS at the network edge, VMware said.

Also launching in beta this week is the new Tanzu Build Service, which helps automate tasks such as container creation, governance and management.

In a separate announcement today, VMware said its vRealize Operations Cloud for managing cloud workloads is now available as well. This is a software-as-a-service product that provides visibility across private, public and hybrid clouds, and enables capabilities such as automated, continuous performance optimization, intelligent remediation and integrated compliance.
