Pegasystems aims to provide backbone to dislocated business strategies

Strategic business plans have been set, shredded and set again under the pressure of COVID-19. First came the panic of how to navigate through the sudden switch as customers and employees went remote. Now, with the fires mostly under control, the long-term understanding of what failed and why is coming to the forefront.

“[Organizations] realize that too often they have built their systems and their technology in silos, in disparate places that don’t really have a center and don’t really understand the true nature of work,” said Alan Trefler (pictured), founder and chief executive officer of Pegasystems Inc.

Trefler spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, to discuss today’s PegaWorld iNspire virtual event. They discussed how Pegasystems helps organizations align business goals with the technology that makes them happen. (* Disclosure below.)

Sustainable strategies fuse technology and business goals

The changes forced on business operations by the pandemic have underscored how a digital strategy is critical for success. But cobbling together applications and “muddling through” is not a sustainable plan, according to Trefler. Instead, companies need to address the root cause of the problem: The people designing and building systems do not communicate with the people who are going to be using them.

Fixing this disconnect so that the business and information-technology departments work together to distribute, manage and automate workflows smoothly is where Pegasystems steps in.

“We’re entirely about creating a transparency there where the business people can actually work directly with IT to model their business. And from that model, our software literally writes the code,” Trefler said.

One area where Pega has proven credentials is the ability to help companies adapt fast to handle unexpected demands. This has come under the spotlight during the current crisis. Trefler described one use case where a global hospital system needed an app to track the health and availability of its more than 200,000 employees.

“We went from nothing to live in less than a week,” Trefler said. The COVID-19 tracker developed for that hospital is now available free for all Pega customers.

Helping Bavarian citizens apply for financial aid is another COVID success story for Pega. A new automated solution, which replaced a manual process where applicants had to complete, scan and email physical forms, went from build to live in just five days.  “[The government] was so thrilled with what they got that they actually put out a press release on their own lauding Pega, which almost never happens,” Trefler said.

Learn how to become future flexible at PegaWorld iNspire

Anyone who wants to learn more about this fusion of IT and business can attend the free PegaWorld iNspire virtual event, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. EDT today. Along with live Q&A sessions with keynote speakers, there will be demos and opportunities to interact with current Pega clients. TheCUBE’s coverage of the event will be here.

“We’re going to be announcing and releasing a whole new foundation for how the longer-term future of organizations is about weaving together disparate systems and their people in ways that will give them that future flexibility … and bringing business and IT together in different ways so they can serve their customers better and be more efficient,” Trefler said.
