Watch live: App modernization takes center stage at Google Cloud Next OnAir

Moving into the realm of cloud computing has become a major stress for traditional enterprises burdened with decades of legacy software applications.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, 71% of CEO’s cited improved agility and faster time to market as a top priority. But upgrades and patches can create security nightmares that can only be cured by sacrificing speed. App modernization brings the cloud attributes of speed and agility to the development process without sacrifice.

Google Cloud Next OnAir, a nine-week series of livestream events, focuses on application modernization during week seven of this series, which kicks off Aug. 25 at 9 a.m. PDT. The keynote address, “Building Trust for Speedy Innovation,” asks the question: Can you have both innovation and stability in enterprise IT? Looking to answer this question and more, theCUBE will be broadcasting live with exclusive commentary and interviews on Aug. 25.

The question of having both innovation and stability in enterprise information technology is one Google has been slower than others to address. Although the company was born an internet-native company, even predating the term “cloud,” Google has led consumer markets with services such as Gmail. Nevertheless, Google was seemingly reluctant to push its internal computing technology to enterprise customers early on, and it lags behind Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure in the enterprise cloud market.

Google to this day still hasn’t figured out how to sell effectively to the enterprise,” Dave Vellante, chief analyst at Wikibon Inc. and host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s livestreaming studio, said in an analysis of Google Cloud’s current market position. “It really struggles to find the right formula.”

Google Cloud plays catch up in the enterprise market

Yet Google has taken steps to differentiate itself, resulting in strong net score market share when it comes to Giant Public + Private organizations, according to June-July 2020 figures from Enterprise Technology Research.

“Google Cloud is more aggressive with partnering around multicloud with [application management platform] Anthos, and it smartly open-sourced Kubernetes to minimize the importance of where workloads run physically,” Vellante said.

The company’s application modernization portfolio includes Anthos, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Run and more.

Strategic partnerships, such as the team-up with endpoint management and security company Tanium Inc., are helping Google Cloud better position itself to the enterprise market. And the COVID-19 push for remote work has helped highlight the urgency of modernizing apps.

Digital transformation is more than just a requirement. It’s a race,” Thomas Kurian, chief executive officer of Google Cloud, wrote in a recent blog post. The company is now gathering app modernization customer success stories, including that of retailer Manhattan Associates, which partnered with Google Cloud to create a platform that merges both traditional and ecommerce sales.

Kurian kicked off Google Cloud Next OnAir with a keynote focused on how Google Cloud is supporting businesses in their digital transformation. Industry experts joining theCUBE for its coverage of Google Cloud Next OnAir include Google Cloud’s Jennifer Lin, vice president of product management; Amit Zavery, head of platform; Sunil Potti, vice president and general manager; and June Yang, general manager of Google Compute.
