‘Apple Silicon’ Macs expected to debut at Nov. 10 event

Apple Inc. today announced an event for Nov. 10 at which it’s expected to debut new Mac computers run by Apple processors.

The event, dubbed “one more thing,” a shoutout to the late Steve Jobs, will be virtual only as per previous events this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What Apple may debut is open to speculation, but a process of elimination points towards new Macs. Apple debuted new versions of iOS, iPadOS and watchOS at an event in June, followed by a new iPad Air and Watch Series 6 at an event in September. October saw the debut of Apple’s latest range of iPhone. But missing from all of those events were new Macs.

Speculation that Apple was developing its on CPUs, referred to by some as “Apple Silicon” based on its own architecture from Arm Ltd., first emerged in a report in April and was confirmed by Apple at WWDC in June.  The shift away from Intel chips is a historic move for Apple after having embraced Intel Corp.’s x86 architecture in 2005.

The “one more thing” event is expected to see the debut of three new laptops: a 13-inch MacBook Air and two MacBook Pro models, a 13-inch model and a 16-inch model. According to Bloomberg, Apple and its overseas suppliers are increasing production of the three new laptops, but beyond the processor switch, the devices will not have significant design changes.

The first Mac processors are said to be based on an A14 chip found in the latest iPhones and iPad Air, with internal tests inside of Apple showing improved power efficiency over the Intel parts they are replacing.

What could be missing from the event is new iMacs and Mac Pros, although some reports suggest that a new 24-inch iMac could be announced at the event. The first Apple event that debuted Intel-based Macs in 2006 featured both a new MacBook Pro and a new iMac; the sentimental shoutout to Steve Jobs in the event headline could be indicative of history repeating.

This being an Apple event, surprises are always possible as well. Some reports suggest that AirPods Studio, new high-end over-ear headphones, could make their debut at the event along with AirTags, Bluetooth trackers that can be attached to items such as keys and wallets.

The event will be streamed live on Apple, YouTube and Apple TV at 10 a.m. PST Nov. 10.
