ChaosSearch Inc. is making its log analytics data platform more useful, creating what it says is the industry’s first true multimodel, multicloud data lake that enables fast, cost-effective log analytics and business intelligence at large scale.

The platform gets a significant update with the ability to perform Structured Query Language queries on Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, making it easier than ever for companies to gain business intelligence from the massive amounts of data stored in their cloud environments, the company said today.

ChaosSearch is known for its secure, scalable log analysis platform that uses AWS and Google Cloud as a hot data store. The company has long pitched itself as an alternative to the ELK stack, which refers to a complex integration of the Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana open-source projects. Enterprises use the ELK stack to aggregate logs from all of their systems and applications, then analyze those logs for application and infrastructure monitoring, troubleshooting and security analytics purposes.

ChaosSearch Chief Executive Ed Walsh said in a December interview on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, that the ELK stack has its limitations when companies attempt to use it at large scale and that this means users have to break up their data into multiple clusters to analyze it properly.

The ChaosSearch Data Platform gets around this by connecting and indexing data directly within customer’s AWS and Google Cloud environments. Walsh explained. This enables it to bypasses the complex data pipelines required by other log data analysis platforms, indexing data in place without the need to transform it first. It makes the data fully searchable and available for analysis within the existing data store, helping customers save on time, complexity and costs.

The addition of the ChaosSearch SQL application programming interface today means that ChaosSearch is no longer just about log analytics. Its users can now perform ad hoc queries on their data and generate business insights using tools such as Looker, Tableau and MetaBase too.

Walsh told SiliconANGLE in an interview today that by adding SQL support, ChaosSearch makes it easy for customers to access business intelligence without moving their data from the cloud or transforming it first. He said many enterprises should benefit from being able to access diverse data sets, such as logs and BI data. For example, some will be able to combine their log analytics data with BI to enable better product experimentation, prospect targeting or A/B testing, he said.

Constellation Research Inc. analyst Holger Mueller told SiliconANGLE that ChaosSearch’s updated platform is welcome because enterprises seek more visibility into their multicloud processes.

“They cannot afford to look at siloed information and automation for each cloud they use,” Mueller said. “What they want is multicloud insights that allow them to analyze and operate the multicloud reality through a single pane of glass. That’s what ChaosSearch provides, so it’s good to see the innovation and progress that gives enterprises more choice on how to manage and operate applications across different clouds.”
