Egress acquires anti-phishing provider Aquilai to strengthen its email security platform

Security startup Egress Software Technologies Ltd. today revealed that it has acquired email anti-phishing provider Aquilai Ltd. for an undisclosed price to strengthen its Intelligent Email Security platform.

Founded in 2017 by artificial intelligence scientists and security experts to solve phishing, the company offers software that protects against phishing attacks. The company says its Ajax Intelligence service is the only solution on the market that was guided by U.K. Cyber Intelligence and is ideal for both small and medium-sized enterprise and enterprise companies that use cloud-based email such as Office 365 and G-Suite.

Aquilai’s technology stops all targeted email attacks across cloud email, including business email compromise, spear-phishing and impersonation attempts. For Egress, the acquisition of Aquilai strengthens the company’s existing email security platform, which solves organizations’ most complex cybersecurity challenge: insider risk.

Combined, the technologies from both companies will offer machine learning and natural language processing to detect all phishing attacks as well as content and context analysis for inbound email traffic. The combined solution also provides streamlined user engagement for enhanced cybersecurity awareness among employees.

The acquisition of Aquilai comes at a time of rapid growth for Egress that includes new hirings in its leadership team, new product enhancements and the opening of an office in New York. As part of the deal, Aquilai Chief Technology Officer Jack Chapman will join Egress as vice president of threat intelligence.

“The powerful combination of Egress and Aquilai will provide customers with protection against all inbound cyberattacks targeting employees and real-time outbound email security for shared data, including inadvertent data loss and email encryption,” Egress said in a statement. “With the increased amount of targeted phishing attacks taking place across multiple vertical markets and enterprise organizations, security leaders need an intelligent, nondisruptive email security solution that detects multivector exploits and thwarts zero-day attacks.”

The acquisition is effective immediately. The amount Aquilai had raised coming into its acquisition is unknown, but LORCA, a U.K. start accelerator, is a known investor and the company also received a grant from the U.K. National Cyber Security Council Cyber Accelerator.
