Amazon releases update after Alexa issues dangerous ‘challenge’ to child

Amazon.com Inc. has updated Alexa after the voice assistant told a 10-year-old girl to place a coin on the prongs of a phone charger plugged halfway into a wall outlet.

The BBC and multiple other publications reported the incident today.

According to the BBC, the incident occurred when the girl asked Alexa for a “challenge to do.” The voice assistant responded by saying “plug in a phone charger about halfway into a wall outlet, then touch a penny to the exposed prongs,” Kristin Livdahl, the girl’s mother, wrote in a tweet.

Alexa reportedly generated the response based on an online article that warned about the dangers of such hazardous “challenges.” Amazon said in a statement that it has updated Alexa to fix the error.

“Customer trust is at the center of everything we do and Alexa is designed to provide accurate, relevant, and helpful information to customers,” an Amazon spokesperson said. “As soon as we became aware of this error, we took swift action to fix it.”

Livdahl posted the tweet detailing the incident on Sunday. Amazon’s customer support group publicly responded within a few hours and, late Monday, Livdahl tweeted that the company appeared to have updated Alexa to fix the error.

Alexa previously entered the headlines in August, when cybersecurity firm Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. discovered a bug that could have allowed hackers to install malicious apps on an Alexa-powered device without the user’s knowledge.

“We fixed this issue soon after it was brought to our attention, and we continue to further strengthen our systems,” an Amazon spokesperson said at the time. “We are not aware of any cases of this vulnerability being used against our customers or of any customer information being exposed.”
