Google halts buggy Pixel 6 and Pro 6 phone software updates

Google LLC said today it’s putting the brakes on a December software update for its new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones amid widespread reports of dropped calls.

The update for the Pixel phones added quite a few new features specifically for those models, as well as a more general security patch for Android. However, multiple users have reported that since installing the update they have experienced regular dropped and disconnected calls, hence the decision to prevent more people from installing it.

The December update was meant to fix a number of issues with the Pixel phones that only launched two months ago, including an issue that caused Google Assistant to start a phone call unintentionally in certain conditions.

In a post on the Pixel Help forums, a Pixel community manager confirmed the update has been paused.

“We have now identified a fix that will roll out in a software update by late January,” the manager said. “This update will also include all the fixes and improvements that were originally planned in December.”

Unfortunately, for those who have already received the update and are experiencing dropped calls, there is no other recourse except to back up their phone and perform a factory reset to revert to the original software version that was first installed on the devices.

Not surprisingly, there has been a fair amount of grumbling about the buggy software rollout on social media.

Google launched the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones in October amid a fair amount of fanfare, as they were the first phones to come with the new Google-designed Tensor chip. They also boast multiple artificial intelligence-powered features such as a “voice typing” capability and the “Magic Erase” photo editing tool.
