The data as code movement is gaining traction in the enterprise.

Consuming and sharing data for the benefit of all users across an organization has led to the growth of a number of startups focused on using data as code to streamline the use of monitoring and analytics tools for enterprise systems.

TheCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s livestreaming studio, will take a closer look at startups involved in the management of data for cloud-native environments as part of the “Data as Code: The Future of Enterprise Data and Analytics” event, an AWS Startup Showcase event, airing on April 5 starting at 10 a.m. PT. Monitoring and sharing

Cloud-native architectures and Kubernetes have created distributed applications in containers with separate data stores. But this data also needs to be monitored and shared in different versions, much like computer code. This has fostered the data as code movement. Data as code allows enterprises to manage data programmatically, configuring automated pipelines, versioning the information, and making it available in collaborative models across clouds.

The latest in a series of Startup Showcase programs jointly developed by AWS and theCUBE will feature several companies with promising technology for realigning the enterprise approach to data management. “Data as Code: The Future of Enterprise Data and Analytics,” airing on April 5, will feature industry expert from the AWS startup ecosystem, including Imply Data, Rockset, Mux, Carto, Ahana, Nexla, Dremio and Cribl.

Rockset Inc., one of the companies that will be featured in the AWS Startup Showcase event, provides a real-time analytics database that enables companies to build data applications rapidly at cloud scale. Today’s enterprise has a torrent of data pouring into IT systems, with a need to perform real-time analytics on top of that information. The standard process is to funnel the information into a data lake and then perform the analytics hours or perhaps days later.

Rockset built a single system that combines a full database with the ability to run SQL queries on top of fast-moving streaming data. What was once a batch job for critical data has now become real time. This solution represents an important step in the evolving cloud-native infrastructure. Modern businesses run on apps, and Rocket is channeling the power of the cloud and its ability to index huge amounts of data rapidly in service of the application.

“The whole movement toward data-intensive applications is a huge use case for us,” said Venkat Venkataramani, co-founder and chief executive officer of Rockset, in an interview with theCUBE. “Most of our customers, I would say, are building a data application in one shape or form.”

Centralizing data monitoring

Another company to be featured during the AWS Startup Showcase event is Cribl Inc. Cribl was founded to address the challenge of turning data into a form that enterprises can analyze through a myriad of monitoring products.

Cribl’s name is derived from “kribəl” or an instrument used to strain valuable material from discardable matter, and the firm was founded by three former employees from Splunk Inc. In February, the startup revealed that it grew its customer base 300% in 2021, adding firms such as Siemens EDA, New Balance Inc. and Vodafone New Zealand as clients.

Cribl’s value proposition is in providing a single platform that orchestrates all of the monitoring-related data streams. The startup’s LogStream platform gathers information from a client’s infrastructure and distributes it to tools as needed. Last year, the company introduced LogStream Cloud as a SaaS application for shifting the control plane into the cloud and allowing customers to manage data sources from multiple locations more efficiently.

“Adopting cloud-native platforms means that digital or product teams will use architectural principles and capabilities to take advantage of the inherent capabilities within the cloud environment,” said Milind Govekar, distinguished vice president at Gartner Inc., in a recent analysis. “New workloads deployed in a cloud-native environment will be pervasive, not just popular, and anything non-cloud will be considered legacy.”
