Reaching double unicorn status, Docker Inc. is fresh off a Series C round of funding in March injecting $105 million into the company. Known for pioneering modern container solutions, Docker’s revitalized spin on developer tools is proving popular.
Ahead of DockerCon 2022, the company’s latest developments will be top of mind. Last month Docker acquired InfoSiftr LLC, a startup specializing in container images and registries. Alongside a new partnership with Nuaware Ltd. and deep integration with Amazon Web Services Inc., Docker’s growing ecosystem for products and touchpoints will also be topics of interest at the annual conference.
The theme for DockerCon 2022, held May 10–11, is “Discover. Learn. Excel.” The live event will be covered by theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, on May 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT.
The free conference is aimed toward collaboration and education among application developers, and theCUBE will be speaking with industry executives, analysts and investors to discuss Docker news, market impacts and more. (* Disclosure below.)
With back-to-back funding rounds exceeding $120 million since early 2021, Docker has significantly extended its runway for product development. The goal is app modernization, with an angle for bleeding-edge tech. From enterprise-grade decentralized infrastructure to machine-learning deployments for bioarchaeology, Docker’s approach to container management is supporting a range of use cases toward abstracting away infrastructure.
Docker long anticipated this trend where infrastructure is defined in software, broken down into API-managed components, according to Dave Vellante, principal analyst at Wikibon, SiliconANGLE’s sister market research firm.
“As … the investors who created Docker saw, the cloud was becoming prominent,” Vellante wrote in a report analyzing current IT sector spending data. Noting the cloud and container spending velocity positions over 40%, Vellante puts these sectors at the “magic mark of momentum” (see chart below).
Scanning the agenda for DockerCon, its flagship Docker Desktop remains an integral component of the company’s long play to gain enterprise inroads amidst monetization challenges. Chief Executive Officer Scott Johnston (pictured) will kickstart DockerCon 2022 to discuss how common DevOps obstacles can be addressed with Docker innovations, with additional demos on Docker Desktop for Linux.
Analyst Holger Mueller of Constellation Research Inc. said the size of Docker’s latest funding round shows how the battle to increase developer velocity through greater productivity is in full swing.
“It’s good to see Docker reemerging as a key player in this market with its new funding,” he said. “This will only increase the competition among those building platforms to make stronger next-generation applications, and that will benefit developers and enterprises alike.”
The past year has seen Docker hit some major milestones, reaching more than 13 million developers, 7 million applications and 13 billion monthly image downloads across its ecosystem. Its partnership with AWS plays an important role, as the public cloud provider crafts its own container management agenda.
The recent launch makes Docker Official Images directly available from AWS, giving DevOps teams more flexibility to download verified, curated container images from their choice of registry.
