New Veeam CEO on innovation, Day One culture and modern data protection

For tech companies, the appointment of new leadership often signals exciting changes in strategy, brand direction and product development.

Anand Eswaran, the newly-minted chief executive officer of Veeam Software Corp., carries a rich portfolio of industry experience to his new position — one that attracted him so strongly to Veeam because of the company’s culture and product value in today’s cloud landscape.

“It’s an innovation and engineering-focused culture, which is so critical to any software company,” Eswaran said. “The second thing is, yes, we’ve reached a billion, but it still has that feel of a startup.”

Eswaran spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and David Nicholson at VeeamON, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the intricacies of Eswaran’s role at Veeam, as well as the companies technology innovations and future mission. (* Disclosure below.)

New horizons to conquer

Founded in 2006, Veeam picked up steam in the mid-2010s. Today, the cloud backup/recovery solutions provider is enjoying unicorn status and, more importantly, has statistically tied Dell EMC for the top spot in its market segment. Thus, Eswaran must reimagine new avenues of increased success for an already successful company.

“The first thing we’ve got to think through is the next evolution of Veeam,” Eswaran said. “There’s a ton of work to do even in the data protection path we’re on. And the team is absolutely brilliant at that. But how do you start to think ahead? How do you think about data management? How do you think about where the adjacencies are and how you shape and reshape the category? I have some experience in that.”

Partnerships are also a core element of Eswaran’s blueprint for Veeam going forward. The ultimate goal is for the company to become a core portfolio element in its primary storage partners’ platforms, and the experience Eswaran brings from running Microsoft’s enterprise business will be key.

“Just last year we grew ARR, you know, 27%. We are sustaining that growth,” he said. “But as I look ahead, you know there’s huge opportunities to further accelerate our share in the enterprise to actually go work with creating multiple layers of partnerships beyond the very successful partnerships we already have.”
