Theator raises $24M to advance surgical care with AI
Theator Inc., a startup using artificial intelligence to advance surgical care, today announced that it has secured $24 million in new funding.
The funding was provided as an extension to a $15.5 million Series A round that Theator had announced in February. According to the startup, Insight Partners led both investments. Theator’s latest $15.5 million raise also included the participation of more than a half-dozen other backers, including Mayo Clinic.
Palo Alto, California-based Theator provides an AI platform that surgeons can use to analyze footage of surgeries and find ways to improve the quality of care. The startup says its platform helps medical teams improve patient outcomes in multiple ways.
Its AI algorithms can process footage of a surgery, identify key moments in the operation and generate a natural language description of each such moment. Theator also provides other data points, including the amount of time that it took to complete each step of the surgery. The startup so far has secured a half-dozen patents for its platform, according to its website.
Theator says its platform can help surgeons prepare for a procedure by surfacing footage of similar operations that were carried out in the past. After the procedure, the platform enables medical teams to carry out performance reviews. The company also provides features that make it easier for surgeons to share medical data and feedback with colleagues.
In addition to data points about specific surgeries, Theator provides higher-level metrics that can be used to track the overall performance of a hospital department. The startup says healthcare leaders can use the insights generated by its platform to help medical teams provide better care.
“This funding is a strong vote of confidence in our vision, team, and the field of Surgical Intelligence as the cornerstone of the future of surgery,” said Theator co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Tamir Wolf. “Surgical Intelligence is already demonstrating significant improvement in surgical quality and safety.”
This latest funding round comes a few days after the startup announced a collaboration with Mayo Clinic to expand its platform’s capabilities. Earlier, it partnered with the Canadian Association of General Surgeons to launch a new surgeon training program. The program will use Theator’s platform to support surgeon training.
“Theator’s technology has proven to be the critical next step in surgical advancement,” said Insight Partners vice president Brad Fiedler. “Integrating AI and computer vision into the operating room improves surgical care and is transforming surgery for the better.”
Theator will use its newly raised funding to expand adoption of its platform.
