Apple reportedly set to launch iPhone 14 range on Sept. 7

Apple Inc. is expected to hold a launch event on Sept. 7 for its iPhone 14 range, according to noted Apple analyst Mark Gurman at Bloomberg.

Referencing people with knowledge of the matter, Gurman said the event will also include the launch of three Apple Watch models with the possibility of new iPads and Macs. Adding to the likelihood of the date, Apple stores are also said to have been told to expect new product releases on Sept. 16. New Apple products typically go on sale around a week following launch events.

As first rumored back in May, the new iPhones are expected to have a revamped locked screen that works hand-in-hand with a new always-on-display in the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models. Code supporting the as-yet released feature was found in iOS 16 when it was released in June.

The iPhone 14 range is expected to have four models, two standard and two pro models. The standard iPhones are expected to be offered in a 6.1-inch model and a new larger 6.7-inch model, with Apple doing away with its previous 5.4-inch “mini” model. The 6.7-inch model will be the first time Apple offers a standard iPhone with a display of that size. The regular models are also expected to be powered by Apple’s A15 chip that made its debut in the iPhone 13 last year.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro range is expected to have more significant changes. Two models, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, will be powered by Apple’s A16 chip and are expected to include a hole-punch, forward-facing camera and pill-shaped cutout for Face ID sensors, finally doing away with a dedicated notch years after Android phones started offering the feature.

The Pro models are expected to gain upgraded cameras, including a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera alongside 12-megapixel ultrawide and telephoto sensors. Gurman believes that the phones will also offer improvements to video recording and battery life.

The Apple Series 8 watches are expected to have new features, including for women’s health and a body-temperature sensor. While the standard watch is expected to have a similar look to the previous model, the new Pro model is described as appealing to sportier consumers with a larger display, rugged titanium case, new fitness tracking features and more battery life.

A third model, expected to be called the Apple Watch SE, is expected to offer a lower price with a faster chip than previous Apple offerings.

On the Mac and iPad side, it’s not entirely clear if Apple will debut new computers and tablets at the event or hold a separate event in October, but as the late Steve Jobs made popular, surprises are expected at big Apple launch events.

Possibilities include a new low-end iPad with an A14 chip and USB-C port, and new iPad Pro models with M2 chips for later this year. Apple has previously been reported to be planning to launch new M2 Mac mini and M2 Pro Mac mini, as well as M2-based MacBook Pros and Mac Pros before the end of the year.
