Apple to debut iPhone 14 lineup and upgraded smartwatches at Sept. 7 event

Apple Inc. today distributed media invitations for a Sept. 7 product event where it’s expected to debut new iPhones and refresh the Apple Watch.

The event is set to take place at the Steve Jobs Theater on the site of Apple’s corporate headquarters in Cupertino, California.

It’s believed that the company will debut its next-generation iPhone 14 smartphone series, which rumors indicate comprises four devices. The entry-level iPhone 14 is said to feature a 6.1-inch display, while a second version reportedly called the iPhone 14 Plus or the iPhone 14 Max will ship with a 6.7-inch screen. Apple is also expected to launch two high-end Pro versions of its flagship smartphone that will likewise offer 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively.

The Pro versions will provide a number of capabilities not included in the two other devices. They are expected to feature a new processor dubbed the A16, as well as a more advanced type of memory known as LPDDR5 memory. Moreover, Apple is said to have replaced the notch that houses the iPhone’s selfie camera with a hole-punch camera designed to take up less space.

The media invitation for Apple’s upcoming product event includes a version of the company’s logo that resembles galaxy. As a result, speculation has emerged that the iPhone 14 lineup may include Apple’s long-rumored satellite connectivity technology. The technology would reportedly enable users to send emergency messages over a satellite-based internet network when there is no cellular tower nearby.

A number of software enhancements are expected as well. Most notably, the upcoming iPhones reportedly feature an always-on mode that will enable the devices to display certain information even when the screen is locked.

Alongside the iPhone 14 lineup, Apple is expected to introduce the latest iteration of the Apple Watch smartwatch lineup. The new Apple Watch Series 8 is reported to include a temperature sensor that can detect when the user may have a fever. Additionally, the device is expected to offer a longer battery life and a low-power mode that uses less electricity.

The new additions to Apple’s iPhone and Apple Watch lineups will reportedly be joined by an array of other devices over the next few quarters. Recent reports suggest that the iPhone maker is preparing to launch an augmented reality headset next year. In addition, it’s believed that Apple will update the Mac Pro with a new chip that features four times as many processing cores as the company’s speedy M1 Max laptop processor.
