Kryptowire changes name to Quokka, launches new mobile security product

Mobile DevSecOps and vulnerability management startup Kryptowire Inc. today revealed that it has changed its name to Quokka Inc. and announced a new mobile security product developed to meet new challenges presented by the shift to remote work.

Founded in 2011, Kryptowire had its roots in funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. Vetted by the U.S. military, law enforcement and intelligence agencies, the newly named Quokka provides mobile security analysis tools, anti-piracy technology, mobile app marketplace security analytics and enterprise mobility management solutions. With its security credentials, not surprisingly the company’s biggest clients are government agencies, although it does have private-sector clients as well.

The name change to Quokka, a small marsupial similar to a kangaroo that can only be found in a small number of locations in Western Australia, is said to be motivated by a need to better identify the company’s guiding ethos and brand promise to keep users safe, happy and secure.

“We wanted a name we and our users could embrace and connect to, one with personality and established trust,” Jaime Le, vice president of marketing at Quokka, said in a statement.” Those who are familiar with quokkas know they’re approachable, exude personality and can’t help but make you smile.”

The description of a quokka may be accurate but also ignores that it’s a primarily defenseless creature easily killed by larger predators — not exactly a strong name for a company providing cybersecurity services to the U.S. military. But along with the name change, the company says that it has refreshed its mission to transform the world of digital security beyond distrust and provide proactive mobile security that makes customers, organizations, and employees feel safe and secure.

Under the new name, Quokka’s first product release is Q-Scout, a bring-your-own-device and privacy-first security solution developed to meet security challenges caused by a shift to remote work and the use of personal devices. Q-Scout provides proactive, privacy-first protection to individuals and businesses, granting users proactive, intelligent control over their digital security and privacy.

The company says the new product provides a better way for individual users and companies to understand and manage devices’ digital security and privacy. The service shows users which apps are vulnerable to security events, which permissions expose them to data leaks, which data is being collected and where it is being sent, and more. Q-Scout then provides easy steps to mitigate risks, keeping users safe, happy and secure.

Q-Scout for Android is available now in the Google app stores, with an iOS version expected to be launched by the end of the month.
