AWS tackles data protection and resiliency issues with recovery planning solutions

With the amount of data being created and stored globally increasing exponentially as data storage innovation progresses, so does the need for adequate data protection.

Maintaining secure and durable data is a challenge nearly every business is facing, with every company essentially becoming a data company as the need for data rises.

“From a data protection perspective, it is just as important to protect and recover your data as it is to be able to detect different events or be able to respond to those events,” said Nancy Wang (pictured, right), general manager of data protection and governance at Amazon Web Services Inc. “That’s where I see AWS’ role, in that we provide a wide breadth of primitives to help customers build secure platforms and scaffolding so that they can focus on building the data protection.”

Nancy and Wayne Duso (pictured, left), vice president of storage, edge and data governance at AWS, spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Dave Vellante at AWS Storage Day, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed AWS’ role in data protection, how ransomware has driven change, expanding the definition of data protection and more. (* Disclosure below.)

Finding the right fit

There are three common themes that come up in conversations with AWS clients about data protection, according to Wang. The first two are the ability to have a centralized solution and to be able to transcribe their intent into whatever they do with their data.

“Number three, they want something that’s policy driven, because once you centralize your policies, it’s much better and easier to establish control and governance at an organizational level,” she said.

AWS Backup and AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery are two managed AWS solutions, with the former being used for on-prem and the latter being more suitable for those moving to the cloud. With ransomware hitting companies more and more frequently, there’s no time for companies to wait on finding the right data protection solution, according to Duso.

“There’s a lot of vigilance… and a lot of planning that needs to be put in place,” he said. “You’ve got to have a great plan, you’ve got to have great protection, and you’ve got to be ready to restore in the case of an incident. We want to make sure that we provide all the capabilities to do that. “
