Contentstack raises $80M for its ‘headless’ content management system

Content management system provider Contentstack Inc. today said that it has raised $80 million in new funding to help enterprise companies meet their demands for customizable content delivery.

Canadian investment firm Georgian and Insight Partners co-led the Series C funding round with participation from Illuminate Ventures. This funding follows the company’s $57.5 million Series B in June 2021 and brings the total raised by the firm to $169 million.

The company’s CMS is used by businesses and brands to manage digital content using a back end that’s separate from what is called the “presentation layer,” with the goal of delivering digital experiences to customers. It does this by offering what is called a “headless CMS” platform, in which that separation of the back end from the front end allows companies to deliver content such as article content, image and videos to any potential channel, including mobile apps, social media, WordPress blogs and storefronts.

“We started Contentstack years ago because other solutions in the market did not meet the growing demand for cloud, omnichannel and ease of working with other technologies,” said Neha Sampat, Contentstack’s founder and chief executive. “Embracing composable means embracing change, empowering teams, getting more bang for your buck and continuing to win in a tough economic environment.”

By using Contentstack’s platform, enterprise users can manage all of their content in one place, which streamlines workflow by separating the content from the channels in which it will be distributed. As a result, all of the content is centralized in one place and then easily distributed to where it will then be displayed and formatted by templates for target customers by user interfaces specific to the applications that will use it.

Contentstack’s features include a no-code automation capability known as Automation Hub that allows business users to automate hundreds of different activities across technologies and events that can happen in real time. It also provides ready support for numerous different environments, technologies and partners so users can be sure that Contentstack will work with almost any vendor.

Users can also access blueprints for best practices and implantation guides to get started with content management, and there’s a fully stocked marketplace of backend applications and integrations for developers.

Since June, Contentstack has continued to grow, the company said. In that time the platform reached more than 50,000 users in 70 global markets. The team expanded to more than 400 employees. The company also doubled the number of customers served, which already includes brands such as Shell, McDonald’s, Mattel, Riot Games, JPMorgan Chase and Riot Games.

Contentstack now delivers a cloud-agnostic solution that supports Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure in the U.S. and Europe.

The company competes with several other headless CMS providers in the market, including modular headless CMS Kontent and open-source headless CMS Strapi, which raised $31 million in June. There’s also the fully agnostic composable data platform startup Directus, which started as a headless CMS. It raised $7 million earlier this month. Other competitors in the headless CMS market include Storyblok and Prismic.

“With the best composable content platform and the industry’s best customer care, Contentstack is determined to help companies on their path,” said Sampat.
