Sustainability isn’t just a critical component of environmental, social and governance goals — it’s becoming something that shareholders and customers are demanding as well.

There are benefits for organizations” bottom lines regarding power, cooling and footprint costs. Given shareholder demands and ongoing global trends, getting a sustainable strategy in place is a crucial requirement.

“Add to that the energy challenges facing Europe, the effects of global inflation, and even more advanced technologies like machine intelligence, and you’ve got a perfect storm where technology can provide some relief to organizations,” said industry analyst Dave Vellante.

On the path to sustainability

A little more than a month ago, Pure Storage launched a fully managed version of its Kubernetes-focused data management platform, Portworx Enterprise, which the company says allows DevOps teams to move container-based apps into productions in seconds. Portworx-as-a-service removes the headache of maintaining multiple Kubernetes clusters with a hosted solution that allows teams to focus on their workloads instead of the management tools, Moor Insights & Strategy analyst Steve McDowell told SiliconANGLE. 

“It’s a great approach that’s more flexible than the managed Kubernetes offerings from the public cloud providers, which tend to only work on clusters hosted within a single cloud,” he said. “Portworx allows you to manage any Kubernetes cluster within reach of your network. That’s a powerful capability.”

A month prior, Pure Storage said it was adding new analytics tools to its server hardware to help customers reach their sustainability goals.

“Running our organization on Pure Storage FlashArray, FlashBlade, Pure1 and Evergreen//One, has not only enabled us to significantly improve the storage performance and data accessibility needed to deliver on this mission, but it has also allowed us to save on space, power and cooling,” said Cengage Chief Information Officer Jim Chilton, one of Pure Storage’s customers. 

The tools enabled Cengage to reduce its overall storage footprint by 80% while doubling to tripling the performance of its previous storage systems, according to Chilton.

Tapping into innovation

Pure Storage has also focused on other technology innovations that customers can utilize to address their energy consumption, including AI. The company also posted information tracking its ESG goals on its website and is one of the rare companies that allows users to access its Gartner Magic Quadrant online.

While Pure still has room for improvement in areas such as gender and ethnic diversity, they should receive kudos for publishing their stats and goals so others can track that progress, according to Vellante. Vendor R&D is beginning to show “tangible results” in systems design, automation and machine intelligence today, he added.

strategy for achieving that vision is through delivering a simple, evergreen data platform that

enables everyone to turn data into intelligence and advantage.”
