Kubernetes traffic replication startup Speedscale raises $9M

Kubernetes traffic replication startup Speedscale Inc. said today it’s ready for primetime after raising $9 million via its pre-seed and seed funding rounds.

The funding was led by Grotech Ventures and saw participation from Sierra Ventures, Tech Square Ventures, Correlation Ventures, CreativeCo, Tom Noonan, Wally Wang and TIE Atlanta.

Although relatively unheard of, Speedscale claims to be a leading player in the nascent “production traffic replication” business, providing tools that help Kubernetes engineers looking to stress-test their application programming interfaces with real-world scenarios.

Speedscale caters to software-as-a-service providers and other companies that make applications accessible through APIs. One of the problems these teams face is that as they constantly push out new updates to their software, they need to be sure it won’t break anything.

That’s where Speedscale’s PTR tools help, enabling developers to replicate the real-world API traffic their applications are likely to experience, before they push out new updates and features in production. It’s a simpler way of testing the resiliency and scalability of Kubernetes apps, Speedscale says, since there’s no need for any scripting, meaning developers can reduce their cloud costs.

Engineering teams can get started with Speedscale’s free developer offering, which allows them to record local interactions with their APIs and auto-generate load, K6 or Postman tests, and also auto-generate mock servers. For more comprehensive testing, Speedscale offers professional and enterprise-grade plans with flexible monthly replay and data limits.

Chief Executive Ken Ahrens said that for all of the strides made in DevOps and monitoring, production incidents and outages are still commonplace among SaaS providers and other organizations. “Validating code changes in complex cloud apps is daunting,” he said. “With Speedscale, development teams can easily replay production traffic, shift left and find major performance problems before a release.”

Prior to today’s funding round, Speedscale said, it had gained significant traction with a number of well-known SaaS firms and Fortune 2000 companies, with its platform being used by the likes of Sephora USA Inc., Vistaprint Netherlands B.V. and Zenni Optical Inc. The startup hopes to use the capital raised today to expand its go-to-market operations and boost adoption further, introducing its platform to Fortune 500 companies.

Grotech Partners General Partner Steve Fredrick said he believes Speedscale has “big potential,” something that’s underscored by its rapid market adoption and the clear return on investment its product provides. “We’ve been impressed with the enthusiasm surrounding the company’s Kubernetes traffic replay platform,” he said. “Speedscale provides an entirely new automated approach that’s changing how developers validate new code and flag and resolve problems ahead of a release.”
