At I/O, Google debuts its first foldable Pixel device alongside new tablet and smartphone

Google LLC is expanding its consumer hardware portfolio with three new Android devices, including its first-ever foldable handset.

All three devices, which debuted at the company’s annual Google I/O event today, run on the Tensor G2 chip it introduced last year. The chip includes eight central processing unit cores based on three different Arm Ltd. designs. There’s also a built-in graphics processing unit, as well as a Google-developed artificial intelligence module.

Pixel Fold

Google’s new top-end mobile device is the $1,800 Pixel Fold, a 7.6-inch tablet that can fold like a book to turn into a 5.8-inch smartphone. Its reconfigurable chassis centers on a stainless steel hinge rated for 200,000 uses. According to Google, the hinge is sturdy enough for the device to be used in half-folded mode as a kind of miniature laptop.

When the main 7.6-inch screen is folded, an external 5.8-inch display activates. Both panels are based on OLED technology that delivers a 120 Hertz refresh rate. However, the main 7.6-inch screen offers a slightly higher resolution of 2208 pixels by 1840 pixels.

Google has placed a 8.3-megapixel camera next to each of the Pixel Fold’s two screens. When the device is in smartphone mode, users have access to three additional sensors. There’s a 48-megapixel main lens, a 10.8-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto module.

Within the Pixel Fold’s case, the Tensor G2 chip that provides its processing capacity is supported by 12 gigabytes of memory. The device can also be configured with either 256 gigabytes or 512 gigabytes of flash storage. According to Google, the Pixel Fold’s internal components draw electricity from a 4,800mAh battery that will facilitate more than 24 hours of use per charge under certain conditions.

Pixel Tablet

The second new addition to Google’s consumer hardware lineup, the Pixel Tablet, will go on sale for less than a third the price of the Pixel Fold. The $499 tablet combines a 11-inch display with a Tensor G2 chip and eight gigabytes of RAM. It can be ordered with either 128 gigabytes or 256 gigabytes of storage.

For the $499 starting price, customers will receive not only the tablet but also a magnetically attached speaker dock. The latter device functions as a stand, turning the Pixel Tablet into a stationary smart screen that can be used to manage smart home appliances. Moreover, the dock includes two speakers and a charging system.

New midrange Pixel phone

Like the two other new handsets that Google debuted today, the Pixel 7a runs on the company’s Tensor G2 chip. It’s a midrange smartphone that will become available starting from $500. That makes it 10% more expensive than Google’s previous-generation midrange handset, the Pixel 6a.

For the higher price, consumers will receive a 6.1-inch screen with a 90 Hertz refresh rate. Google says it’s 25% brighter under direct sunlight than the display that shipped with the Pixel 6a.

The search giant has also made other upgrades. It replaced the previous 12.2-megapixel main camera with a more advanced 64-megapixel lens and added support for wireless charging. According to Google, the Pixel 7a can run for up to 72 hours per charge when used in battery-saving mode.
