As the world of data storage is transformed and data and artificial intelligence converge, organizations have no choice but to respond. What does that response look like?

For Vast Data Inc., the next steps involve an evolution beyond being a storage company. That future will be unveiled on Aug. 1 as a part of a new initiative called Build Beyond.

The “Vast presents: Build Beyond” event on Aug. 1, hosted by industry analysts Dave Vellante and John Furrier, will reveal how Vast views the future of data.

“Over the past several months, we’ve been building out a model to better understand future data platforms,” Vellante said. “We use the metaphor of Uber for the enterprise.”

‘Uber for the enterprise’

What is “Uber for the enterprise” all about? Consider the Uber app, which accumulates structured, unstructured and semi-structured data, including information about drivers, riders, destinations, ETAs and money. Uber then makes all that data coherent so that actions can be taken in real time, according to Vellante.

“Data is becoming the digital representation of your business. Incoming data informs the state of your business, and data is the API by which you will program your business in the future,” he said.

The problem is that today’s data platforms aren’t built for those types of real-time distributed interactions, Vellante added. That’s why Uber had to build it themselves.

“We believe the combination of AI and new data architectures are emerging from innovation companies and ecosystems to deliver this type of capability to all enterprises, without the need to have hundreds of Uber class engineers on staff,” he said.

Vast’s early morning announcement will also feature interviews with thought leaders in AI, including from The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence and MIT, as well as insights from companies such as Zoom Video Communications Inc. and Pixar Animation Studios.

Vast has been experiencing rapid growth

In March, Vast announced that it had posted its best year and best quarter in the company’s history, going from $1 million to $100 million in annual recurring revenue within three years of selling.

“Last year marked an inflection point for Vast as the explosion in machine data and AI propelled us beyond early adopter customers into more established, global enterprises who are looking to deploy innovative, yet proven technologies into their data stack,” said Renen Hallak, founder and chief executive officer of Vast Data, in a release announcing the earnings.

In recent months, the company has collaborated with Pixar as the data platform for the company’s new film “Elemental,” and in April, it announced a strategic partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. to provide software for HPE GreenLake for file storage.

In June, Jeff Denworth, co-founder of Vast Data, spoke with Furrier about the company’s quest to redefine data infrastructure.

“Our observation is that people are now starting to architect strategies to collect tons more data because, for the first time ever, they can actually go and process it,” he said. “Big-time investors in the field and successful companies are realizing the value of data hoarding. This shift from real-time data to historical data is a trend that is not hard to achieve anymore, and democratizing access to this valuable resource is the true game-changer.”

At Build Beyond, the company promises to expand beyond its storage foundation to “unlock the true promise of intelligent AI-based systems.”

“We needed to build something from the ground up that puts data at the center of how systems think, react and discover, making it possible for organizations to solve their most pressing data challenges,” said Hallak in a release announcing the event. “On Aug. 1, we will build on that foundation of innovation and announce the company’s next chapter.”
