IBM Beyond Firewalls Resilience Strategies for All, October 2023 SECURITY

What to expect during the “Beyond Firewalls: Resilience Strategies for All” event: Join theCUBE Oct. 19

Since 2004, October has been known as Cybersecurity Awareness Month in the United States and elsewhere. This month marks the 20th iteration of the event, and it couldn’t be landing at a more pressing time.

In recent months, there have been high-profile hacks, such as the ransomware attack that recently crippled services at MGM Resorts International Inc., but warnings around cybersecurity are nothing new. What comes next — and how companies can respond — will be of top interest during the “Beyond Firewalls: Resilience Strategies for All” event.

IBM Corp. has been looking to respond by attempting to facilitate the shift from cybersecurity to cyber resilience. It has also been seeking to assess risks and architect steps to protect businesses, including through its cyber resilience assessments.

During the “Beyond Firewalls: Resilience Strategies for All” event, theCUBE industry analyst Rob Strechay will talk with technology experts to explain cybersecurity threats and how to build a defense. Join theCUBE on Oct. 19 for our coverage of the event live on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. (* Disclosure below.)

Challenges and solutions

The numbers bear out the urgency of having such a conversation. In July, IBM Security found the global average data breach cost increased to $4.45 million in 2023, up 15% over the last three years. The report also covered the significant role of artificial intelligence in automating data breach management. Of course, this being 2023, AI is a big part of the conversation, including for IBM.

In July, the company cited double-digit revenue growth in two strategic business areas — Red Hat hybrid cloud and AI. AI gained 10% from a year earlier, easing challenges of a slowing economy and challenging currency exchange rate developments, according to Holger Mueller, principal analyst at Constellation Research Inc.

“The good news is that Red Hat is holding up with 11% growth, and IBM is gaining a second leg from the strong momentum of its data and AI portfolio,” Mueller said.

More recently, IBM introduced a new lineup of language models. The Granite series will become available as part of its watsonx product suite and rolled out alongside other new features.

“As demonstrated by the ongoing rollout of the watsonx platform within just a few months since launch, we are here to support clients through the entire AI lifecycle,” said Dinesh Nirmal, senior vice president of products with IBM Software, in a release at the time of the announcement.

New AI collaborations

IBM has been seeking throughout the year to deploy generative AI use cases in modern data protection. Throughout the year, it has also been pursuing new AI collaborations.

In August, IBM partnered with Microsoft Corp. to help firms build generative AI applications with Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service. Less than a week later, the company announced it would use watsonx to help enterprises modernize business-critical mainframe applications. That same month, IBM partnered with Salesforce Inc. with the goal of helping organizations adopt Salesforce’s AI services. Of course, all of these developments around AI are exciting, but further demonstrate how cybersecurity has found itself at a crossroads with more advanced challenges to solve.

Understanding the threats posed to cloud environments is also critical. The IBM X-Force security consultancy annual “Cloud Threat Landscape Report” was released in September, finding that cloud-related vulnerabilities have doubled since 2019.

All of this — including IBM’s approach to end-to-end cyber defense and insights into how IBM is facilitating the shift from cybersecurity to cyber resilience — will be of key interest during the Beyond Firewalls: Resilience Strategies for All event. TheCUBE will provide full coverage of the event to capture all the breaking news and provide analyst-driven commentary on product announcements.
