Microsoft integrates OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 into Bing for enhanced image creation

Microsoft Corp. announced today that OpenAI LP’s DALL-E 3 artificial intelligence image creation tool is now available to users via Bing Chat and Bing Create for free.

DALL-E 3, launched by OpenAI on Sept. 20, is the latest addition to a series of image-generating neural networks that the company introduced in 2021. OpenAI says DALL-E 3 generates higher-quality images and is capable of understanding user prompts more accurately than previous versions of DALL-E and other image generators.

Until now, DALL-E 3 has been available only to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, the paid version of OpenAI’s generative AI service. With Bing now providing the service for free, those wanting to use the service no longer have to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus.

DALL-E 3, as implemented in Bing, is said to produce realistic and diverse images from natural language prompts. Key features include relevance and prompt following, with DALL-E 3 following the user’s prompt with additional precision and reliability compared to previous models. It also generates images that are more photorealistic than other models for various prompts, with visually appealing images that are also logically consistent with the prompt.

On the aesthetic side, DALL-E 3 generates images that are not only realistic but can also be creative and artistic. The images can be uniquely styled with a flair that meets a Bing user’s creativity.

DALL-E 3 in Bing also ensures user safety, dealing with the risks and challenges in what Microsoft calls “synthetic media.” Content credentials accompany all images created by Bing Image Creator, including an invisible digital watermark adhering to Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity specifications. The watermark includes the time and date the image was originally created and confirms the provenance of the image as AI-generated.

The content moderation system in Bing removes any images that are harmful or inappropriate. The system has been trained to follow terms of service and community guidelines to avoid images that contain nudity, violence, hate speech or illegal activities.
