EnterpriseDB targets analytical ambitions with Splitgraph acquisition

EnterpriseDB Corp., which sells a commercial version of the popular open-source PostgreSQL database management system, today announced that it has acquired Splitgraph Inc., a startup that provides a Postgres-compatible serverless SQL application program interface for accessing data from hundreds of sources, for an undisclosed price.

The UK-based Splitgraph describes its service as a content delivery network for data. It works with server-based and serverless applications and browsers to automatically query data from over 100 software-as-a-service sources and about a dozen popular databases and data warehouses, including many government sources. Data can be queried live or loaded on a schedule.

Splitgraph also provides data integration, cataloging and governance for both in-house data and information sourced from open publishers through a single Postgres interface.

EnterpriseDB said the acquisition is intended to advance its analytics and artificial intelligence capabilities and address users who want to run analytical queries across diverse data sets. “We’re taking a leap in making data lake and data warehousing operations more efficient, streamlined and collaborative,” Chief Executive Officer Kevin Dallas said in a statement.

Since its acquisition by private equity firm Great Hill Partners LP in 2019, EnterpriseDB has been on a campaign to stir up enthusiasm for PostgreSQL, an open-source relational database management system that is known for its reliability, performance and flexibility. The company introduced a fully managed offering called BigAnimal in 2021.

Last February it announced a highly available distributed DBMS boasting up to 99.999% uptime and six months later made it available in the cloud. Dallas, a nearly 25-year veteran of Microsoft Corp., was named CEO in August, replacing Ed Boyajian, who had led the company since 2008.
