As a particular technology becomes increasingly more popular and useful, it may also gain the attention of malicious hackers.
A newly released “Kubernetes Security Report” detailed an analysis of over 200,000 cloud accounts and found evidence that hackers were discovering containers anywhere from minutes to less than three hours after creation. The report provides yet another example of how IT customers are confronted with a dizzying array of threats and must deal with uncertainty over how to deal with them.
“Perhaps you’ve been hacked or you’re just feeling exposed,” said Dave Vellante, industry analyst for theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during one recent broadcast on theCUBE. “For many customers, it’s a bit overwhelming to try and figure out how to secure your entire estate or even where to start.”
To help IT leaders become better prepared for modern cyberattacks, theCUBE will present the ongoing Dell event series, “Navigating the Road to Cyber Resiliency,” a special summit on Dec. 12 at 10 a.m. PT. The Cyber Resiliency Summit will bring together industry leaders, cybersecurity experts, analysts and technology solutions providers to explore current strategies and best practices to safeguard the digital landscape. One of the sobering lessons from today’s threat environment is that no organization or municipality is immune from a cyberattack. In mid-September, an attack disrupted email, phone and payment systems for Pittsburg, Kansas, a town of approximately 20,000 people. This is a major problem for local governments that have grown increasingly reliant on technology solutions to deliver services to residents.
It’s led city governments to seek sophisticated, multilevel solutions to improve cyber resiliency. In the town of Gilbert, Arizona, city officials turned to Dell for solutions, including Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, Dell PowerProtect DP series appliances, and the Dell Data Protection Suite with Avamar.
“We’re strategic in our thinking — we want to understand what the threat surface looks like and find the appropriate tools and partners,” said Tony Bryson, chief information security officer for the town of Gilbert, who described the solution in a case study and will appear on theCUBE’s program in December. “PowerProtect Cyber Recovery protects us by making our key data inaccessible. By segregating from our network, the vault means attacks can no longer move laterally across our network to access this particular set of data.”
The vault concept used by the town of Gilbert is becoming a useful option for organizations seeking to limit damage in the event of a breach and recover critical assets quickly.
Global IT services provider DXC Technology Inc. has partnered with Dell to provide the DXC Data Platform Vault, which runs on Dell Data Domain hardware. The vault solution offers an operational air gap, multilayered security and analytics. It is the first vault-based solution to be endorsed by Sheltered Harbor, a non-profit industry initiative to enhance stability and resiliency in the financial industry.
DXC, which is also participating in the theCUBE’s Cyber Resiliency Summit, has been working in over 70 countries to help clients balance cost optimization with agility, innovation and resilience.
“When you look at protecting that data, not only do you want to put it in what we call a vault, which is Dell technology that is an offline, immutable copy of your crown jewel data, but also how to recover it in real time,” said Andrew Gonzalez, partner sales principal of cloud and infrastructure, America, at DXC, in an interview earlier this year on theCUBE. “We look at not only how to protect the data, but how to alert and monitor for attacks in real time, how to understand what to do when a breach is in progress, understand what your data actually entails so you can protect it and you can build out your recovery plan for it.”
