HPE and the Ryder Cup: Partnering for innovation and sustainability in golf
The game of golf is undergoing a complete transformation in all aspects, including a player’s swing, round strategy and even the equipment they utilize.
This revolution is being driven by scientific advancements, data analysis, machine learning and cloud technologies.
“In partnership with HPE, we were very keen that this wasn’t just about technology for the Ryder Cup — this was an innovation platform,” Michael Cole (pictured, right), chief technology officer of the PGA European Tour and Ryder Cup Europe. “We were hosting the Ryder Cup, arguably one of the world’s top five sporting events, in their historical city of Rome. Our challenge was how we were going to bring technological innovation into the ancient city of Rome.”
Cole and Max Walker (left), chief technologist of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co., spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Rob Strechay and Rebecca Knight at the HPE Discover Barcelona event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how technology has a significant impact on golf, particularly in terms of sustainability, data visualization and enhancing the spectator experience. (* Disclosure below.)
Data visualization
The partnership between Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. and the Ryder Cup brought technological innovation to the Ryder Cup, including the use of Wi-Fi 6E, private 5G and sustainability measures, according to Cole. Data visualization was used at the event to harness the power of data and derive valuable insights for monitoring, management and enhancing the spectator experience.
HPE is working to reinvent the spectator experience, drive operational efficiency and reduce carbon footprint, with learnings from working with the PGA and the Ryder Cup.
“The Ryder Cup is very agile — you’re in the moment, and we learn a lot from doing that, from a technology perspective, from a people perspective and from a process perspective,” Walker said. “Actually, we can use that in other stadiums, or other large public venues, to build upon it and give our customers a better insight into the data, into some of the aspects that will work and won’t work in those venues.”
