The Cyber Resiliency Summit has shed considerable light on many key enterprise cybersecurity issues to serve as a beacon, guiding organizations on the complex journey towards cyber resiliency.
The mission of the Summit includes sharing insights, experiences and strategies to address the persistent challenges in the realm of cybersecurity, according to Rob Emsley (pictured), director of data protection marketing at Dell Technologies Inc.
“Come January, we’ll be releasing a new set of insights,” Emsley said. “[It’s] the 2024 “Global Data Protection” research, and it’s a special edition focused on cyber resiliency and multicloud. One of the things that the survey keeps telling us is that customers just haven’t arrived at their destination yet. They’re still staying awake at night, worried about how to bring the business back after a ransomware attack or a cyberattack.”
Emsley spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and John Furrier at the Cyber Resiliency Summit, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the intricate path to cyber resiliency, emphasizing the need for collaboration, balanced investments and a robust data protection strategy. (* Disclosure below.)
The summit underscores the fact that cybersecurity is a collective effort, necessitating collaboration across organizations. While acknowledging the challenges within organizations, the broader conversation touches on the importance of an ecosystem that brings together hardware, software, services and expertise, according to Emsley.
“Customers are learning that they can’t go on this journey alone — they need help,” he said. “Whether or not it’s with global alliances or global system integrators, whether or not that be people that work with Dell or just system integrators that can help customers, they’re going to those sources. The good thing is that we’ve seen a year-over-year set of changes that customers are starting to realize.”
Dell’s long-standing involvement in cybersecurity, triggered by events like the Sony attack a decade ago, highlights the company’s journey from isolated recovery solutions to the current emphasis on cyber recovery and resiliency, Emsley explained.
“We started with a very custom-built solution in the isolated recovery solution,” he said. “We now market that and provide that to customers under the name of PowerProtect Cyber Recovery. Certainly, that’s a decade-long journey that we’ve been on. And now if you think about the data protection market in the backup and recovery space, there’s not a single vendor out there that hasn’t pivoted to lead with cyber recovery and cyber resiliency.”
A significant revelation from the summit is the need for organizations to strike a balance between cyber prevention and recovery. Traditionally, investments heavily favored prevention technologies, but the escalating economic impact of cyber threats has spurred a realization that recovery strategies are equally vital.
The aforementioned upcoming research indicates a shift in spending patterns, with organizations acknowledging the importance of allocating resources to both prevention and recovery, according to Emsley.
“I think you’re definitely starting to see customers realizing they need to get the balance right,” he said. “For many, many years, customers have been investing a lot of their IT dollars on cyber prevention technologies, keeping the bad guys out. The reality is that you’ve got to also invest in recovering when those defenses aren’t good enough.”
