Coder secures $35M to expand global footprint and enhance cloud development tools

Remote development platform company Coder Technologies Inc. announced today that it has raised $35 million in new funding to broaden its open-source footprint, evolve cloud development environments and expand globally.

Founded in 2017, Coder provides open-source tools and an enterprise platform aimed at making it easier to configure, secure and scale development environments. The company’s mission is to make developers 10 times more productive by rethinking software development and allowing developers to access centralized cloud development environments, or CDEs, from any browser.

The company pitches its service as offering a combination of simplicity and customizability to give developers the power to create, access and collaborate on development environments from anywhere, without having to host and manage code locally. Doing so streamlines developer workflows, saves time and accelerates innovation.

Coder launched the 2.0 version of its service in September with a cloud-native platform that allows developers to write, run and test their code on any device using a cloud development environment. Coder 2.0 saw the addition of new Dev Container support, a template registry and integration with JFrog Ltd.’s Artifactory and Xray and was designed to shift development from local workstations to cloud-based workspaces, accelerating onboarding and productivity for developers and coders.

Coder offers free and paid versions — an open-source and free version for small teams of developers, and an optional annual subscription for DevOps and platform engineering teams needing additional security, observability and governance capabilities.

The company has nearly 30 million developers using its tools and services. Notable customers include Progressive Corp., Dropbox Inc., Infosys Ltd., Robinhood Markets Inc., Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Block Inc.

Georgian Partners Growth LP lead the funding round, with existing investors Uncork Capital LLC, Notable Capital LLC and Redpoint Ventures LP also participating.

“Coder has great momentum with large enterprises and cloud-native organizations and we believe there is an opportunity to grow from the No. 1 enterprise CDE to the No. 1 CDE overall, displacing incumbents like GitHub Codespaces,” Rob Whiteley, chief executive officer of Coder, said in a statement. ‘Georgian’s focus on open source tooling, developers and AI/ML makes them the perfect partner for Coder as we double down on CDEs.”

Including the new funding, Coder has raised approximately $85 million to date, according to data from Tracxn.
