Samsung debuts Fold 6, Flip 6 alongside new Galaxy Ring and Watch Ultra wearables
Smartphone and electronics maker Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. took the stage today to announce its newest generation of foldable smartphones with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6, designed to boost performance for the company’s artificial intelligence enhancements.
Announced during the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event in London, the company also unveiled an expanded line of wearables including the new Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra. For music and audio lovers, Samsung announced new earbuds with the Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro.
“Samsung is driven by a relentless focus on innovation. It’s embedded in our DNA, and this launch is a testament to that, bringing to our customers the next generation of foldables – our slimmest, lightest and most durable yet,” said James Kitto, vice president and head of MX, Samsung UK and Ireland. “This is the next frontier of Galaxy AI, supercharging this unique form factor with enhancements across features such as Circle to Search with Google – optimized for the ultimate user experience.”
Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is a large-screen foldable smartphone that’s Samsung’s newest entry into the market that’s much closer to being like an actual “bar” smartphone. When folded up, it’s slimmer than its predecessors and presents a forward-facing screen like a normal smartphone at 6.7 inches, but can unfold into a tablet-like form with a 7.6-inch internal screen.
The screen itself is capable of up to 2,600 nits of brightness, making it visible even in sunlight. The phone comes with a 4,400mAh battery for long-lasting run time. The phone supports five cameras: a 10-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 10MP telephoto, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 50MP wide-angle and a 4MP under-display camera. The Fold 6 also offers 12 gigabytes of memory with 256GB, 512GB and 1TB variants for extra storage.
The Fold 6 and the Flip 6 are powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform from Qualcomm Inc. that combines the best-in-class central processor, graphics processor and neural processor. With this performance and the flip style, users can call up Google LLC’s generative AI Gemini with “OK, Google,” and use the split screen to review results, engage using Circle to Search and use the dual-screen AI-powered Interpreter for real-time translation.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 sits as a much smaller flappable variation to the Fold 6 with a small square forward-facing AMOLED 3.4-inch screen that flips up to open into a smartphone-like form factor of double the screen size on the inside.
The objective behind the Flip series is to be conveniently tailored to fit in the pocket. The new Flip 6 features a new 50-megapixel wide-angle, 12MP ultra-wide camera and a 10MP selfie camera. It comes with the same 12 gigabytes of RAM as the Fold 6, but only 256GB and 512GB storage variants.
The Galaxy Ring
Designed to become a new sensor platform for wellness and health, the new Galaxy Ring aims to be an unobtrusive way for people to monitor themselves all day long, the company said. It comes in nine sizes to fit most fingers and offers three color choices including black, silver and gold.
To allow the ring to perform at its best day-to-day, its battery allows up to seven days of continuous operation and ships with a quick charging case.
The ring is built with several sensors capable of tracking a user’s heart rate, sleep cycles and other health indicators. All data can be integrated into the Samsung Health platform where users can see and understand their health information. Users can also access new Galaxy AI enabled features that will help them understand how their behavior affects their daily life and wellness based on the data provided by the ring and its sensors.
Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra
The Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra build on the series of Watch wearables with a new chip, Wear OS 5 and advanced AI algorithms for sleep analysis and, new monitoring for heart health using electrocardiogram and blood pressure.
Samsung equipped the Watch 7 with a three-nanometer processor that delivers 30% improved power efficiency and three times faster CPU performance than its predecessor. It is also the first smartwatch to offer a dual-frequency GPS, which can more precisely track locations in the middle of dense cities.
The Ultra format provides more extreme durability than the standard Watch and delivers a casing capable of 10 atmospheres of water resistance. It can also operate in a wider range of environments and is designed for an audience of sports enthusiasts as well as wilderness explorers.
Watch 7 and Ultra are the first Android smartwatches to be powered by Wear OS 5, which offers improvements to battery life, more watch faces and app support.
Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro
Samsung’s new earbuds, the Galaxy Buds 3 and Pro, bring enhanced speakers designed for high-quality audio even in loud environments.
Both earbuds in the series come with Active Noise Cancellation through Adaptive EQ and Adaptive ANC. Using this technology, the earbuds constantly listen to outside noises by collecting and identifying surrounding sounds and adjusting the noise reduction to match.
The company said it built dual amplifiers and enhanced two-way speakers into the Buds 3 Pro to increase their output and that they support a double sampling rate with the Samsung Seamless Codec. Phone calls also receive a clarity update with pretrained machine learning models that restore the voice of the caller by cutting out noise.
