Infrastructure meets virtualization: IBM expands VMware integrations to drive gen AI workloads

The expansion of generative artificial intelligence use cases has exposed inefficiencies in scaling today’s enterprise storage implementations. IBM Storage has created future-ready solutions to solve these challenges.

Through integrations, enterprises can leverage their existing VMware investments while enhancing their capabilities with IBM Corp.’s advanced storage solutions, according to Scott Baker (pictured), chief marketing officer and vice president of IBM hybrid cloud infrastructure portfolio at IBM.

IBM’s Scott Baker discusses integrations with VMware for AI.

“What we begin to see is organizations out there are trying to figure out,  ‘How do I take the VMware investment that I’ve made so far, and then how do I leverage that in such a way so that generative AI becomes a complementary workload versus a rip-and-replace kind of a strategy to where I dump everything that’s virtualized to switch to gen AI?” Baker said.

Baker spoke with theCUBE Research’s Dave Vellante and John Furrier at VMware Explore, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the combination of IBM’s storage expertise with VMware’s virtualization capabilities, allowing more efficient, secure and scalable IT infrastructures ready to meet the challenges of the AI era.

IBM storage: Driving data privacy and security in the AI era

IBM has worked closely with VMware’s engineering team to ensure seamless integration of IBM’s storage products into VMware’s ecosystem. This includes support for VMware’s Virtual Volumes, vRealize and VMware Cloud Foundation, according to Baker.

“I think AI begins to create a workload with true intrinsic business value that can certainly be monetized,” he said. “What we’re beginning to see, and certainly something we’re doing at IBM, is how far down we can push the AI capabilities.”

With the rise of AI, data privacy and security have become more critical than ever. AI technologies, especially those handling large datasets, require robust security measures to protect sensitive information. The IBM-VMware partnership addresses these challenges head-on by integrating advanced security features into their storage solutions, Baker added.

“We’re not only looking at people that are coming in to try to lock that data down and hold it for ransom, but we’re also looking at people that try to come in and then have some kind of an effect on the data itself that could potentially change the outcome of the model,” he said.
