Transforming high-performance computing with advanced cooling and supply chain innovations
High-performance computing, or HPC, is evolving to meet the growing demands of artificial intelligence, large-scale data processing and increased computing power.
Central to this transformation is the development of advanced cooling technologies to manage the heat generated by high-density systems. Complementing these breakthroughs, robust supply chains and innovative fluid-conveyance solutions ensure seamless implementation on a global scale.
“We are in the great world of HPC and integrity of connection … and leaks has never been more important,” said Lauren Witter (pictured, left), vice president of sales at Omni Services Inc., a company specializing in fluid-conveyance solutions. “So … we’ve created a tremendous division called Cool Flow, which is a product-focused group to support folks like CoolIT.”
Witter and Mitchell Knight (pictured, right), director of product management at CoolIT Systems Inc., spoke with theCUBE Research’s Savannah Peterson and Dave Vellante at SC24, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. Pushing cooling boundaries while scaling solutions for HPC
Effective cooling remains one of the most pressing challenges for HPC systems. As computing power increases, so does the need for advanced thermal management solutions. CoolIT Systems is confident in its ability to meet these escalating demands.
“We’ve been doing more than 300 kilowatts in a single rack without concerns or issues. And that’s 5.7 kilowatts within each individual server node,” Knight said. “So, the numbers don’t scare us. The next-generation numbers don’t scare us.”
However, scaling these innovations requires robust and reliable supply chains to prevent bottlenecks and inefficiencies. A unified approach to materials and components is critical to ensuring seamless implementation across the industry.
“The plan is to try to [get] the industry together to adopt a lot of the same principles of this value-added integration … then we can all scale together,” Witter said. “The more we can agree on principles and materials, the more Mitchell [Knight] and other competitors and other folks can leverage the same channel.”
Shortening development cycles without compromising quality is another pressing priority for the industry. Companies are working to improve production efficiency to support the demand for cutting-edge solutions.
“We really need to actually shorten our development cycles while still maintaining the level of robustness and quality,” Knight said. “Right now, we’re at four months … for a new passive cold plate loop product. That has not been fast enough to keep up with how quickly the industry’s moving.”
To meet the escalating demands of HPC, collaboration across the industry is essential. By uniting efforts, companies can create standardized solutions that streamline production and improve scalability. This unified approach ensures that both innovation and supply chain efficiency go hand in hand, according to Witter.
“I think it’s … [about supporting] that growth. It’s to help the industry, as a whole, understand this value-added integrator of Omni. You don’t have to buy bulk hose and fittings and become hose assemblers and do all this testing [yourself]. You can focus on cold plates and scale. Everything can come in ready to plug and play and we can grow together, leak-free,” Witter said.
