Adobe unveils Photoshop iPhone app with numerous free features

Adobe Inc. is making its Photoshop image editing tool more accessible than ever with a mobile version available today on Apple Inc.’s iPhone that brings professional level post-processing to smartphones.

Photoshop is best known for being among the best-in-class image editing software, with tools that include layering, masking, filters and capabilities such as artificial intelligence-powered generative fill and add. Most power users needed a beefy personal computer or a web interface to take advantage of its power, but now all they need is a mobile device.

Although the mobile app is coming to Apple devices first, including iPhone and iPad, Adobe said it plans to roll out its software for Android mobile devices soon.

The company also announced powerful enhancements to Photoshop on the web that include updates to the interface designed to allow users to easily transition between web and mobile. Users will easily recognize the iconic menu system, frame and window design and user interface. It will also include direct integration with the company’s library of free assets and expanded availability for browsers including Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge.

“Photoshop’s new mobile and web apps unlock next generation creativity, empowering creators to bring to life gorgeous photos, rich and incredible art anytime, anywhere,” said Ashley Still, senior vice president of digital media at Adobe.

The company emphasized that the new mobile app has been custom-designed for phone users and fashioned with access in mind. It’s designed to make first time image editing and design features easy for beginners while retaining the same advanced capabilities for power users who have migrated from the desktop application. Adobe said it’s designed to remain compatible across different platforms — desktop, web and iPad.

Free features in the mobile app include capabilities for combining, composing and blending images, core tools in Photoshop including selections, layers and masks. It also provides access to powerful generative AI tools powered by Adobe’s Firefly AI model, such as the generative fill and generative expand tools to add and modify design elements with prompts. Users will also be able to play with free Adobe Stock assets.

It will also include the ability to work on projects from Adobe Express, a complete free cloud-based creative platform aimed at mainstream audiences. It lets users create graphics, videos, web pages and more from templates that is accessible on mobile and desktop. Users can also interface it through work on Adobe Fresco, a free app for vector and raster graphics, and Adobe Lightroom, a free photo organization, storage and editing app.

For power users looking for a little extra, Adobe is launching a new Photoshop Mobile and Web subscription that opens up access to more creative editing features and resources. It expands access to commercially safe, Firefly-powered tools that allow users to generate similar images in Photoshop web, access to more than 20,000 fonts, content-aware fill, advanced blend modes and content-aware erasure.

The new plan costs $7.99 a month or $69.99 annually, which includes all the additional features on mobile and iPad for access for Photoshop on the web.
