HPE expands fault-tolerant line with faster processors and more memory support

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. today introduced two new additions to its Nonstop Compute portfolio that improve performance and capacity.

The NS5 X5 uses Intel Corp.’s Xeon Bronze 3400 series processors, while the high-end NS9 X5 (pictured) incorporates Intel’s Xeon Gold 6400 series. Both models now support up to 8 terabytes of memory, double the capacity of previous generations.

The NS9 X5 delivers 2.5 times more networking bandwidth, HPE said. It’s also backward compatible with the last two generations of Nonstop Compute systems.

HPE’s Nonstop architecture integrates compute, storage, software, and networking with fault-tolerant design features. International Data Corp categorizes them as Availability Level 4 (AL4), meaning they provide 99.999% to 99.9999% uptime. This makes them a favorite for high-availability environments such as core banking, ATM services and retail card payment processing. HPE said six of the top 10 global retail banks use Nonstop systems.

The launch also features an operating system update that incorporates support for multi-factor authentication. HPE said that feature is critical for organizations that need to meet regulatory requirements such as Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation and under GDPR, the Payment Card Industry Data Security and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Both new processors are now available as standalone systems or through HPE’s GreenLake consumption-based service model. Deployment and migration services are provided by HPE Nonstop Compute engineers.
