With Snowflake’s help, fitness wearable Whoop keeps its data in peak condition

If you are looking to stay fit, Whoop Inc. might have an answer in the form of a fitness tracker supported by artificial intelligence.

Whoop is a wearable that collects biometric data, with a focus on cardiometabolic health. The screenless device uses personalized algorithms to derive insights from user data. Now, in partnership with Snowflake Inc., Whoop is strengthening its data management and expanding its use of AI.

Snowflake’s Jeff Hollan and Whoop’s Matt Luizzi talk with theCUBE about their organizations’ partnership.

“Once we had the data in Snowflake, tapping into the AI layer, it was actually the easiest part because they’re making it extensible into our solution where it lives,” said Matt Luizzi (pictured, right), senior director of business analytics at Whoop. “There’s no setting up additional permissions or security. It’s all inherited from the platform itself. That piece itself is trivial on top of it, I would say.”

Luizzi and Jeff Hollan (left), head of applications and developer platform at Snowflake, spoke with theCUBE’s Rebecca Knight and Dave Vellante at Snowflake Summit, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how Snowflake’s data services enhance Whoop. (* Disclosure below.)

Whoop’s picture of health

Whoop utilizes Snowflake for in-depth data analysis, examining how customers are using the product and identifying which features are most popular. Being able to run native applications in Snowflake also takes care of data security concerns, Hollan emphasizes.

“The agents are incredibly good at taking a very complex question and breaking it down into smaller parts, going and querying the different aspects of my Snowflake account,” he said. “There was a lot of work, this partnership between people like Matt and his team, our AI research team and some of these frontier models to figure out there’s some incredible power when you start to merge these things together.”

Snowflake has been part of the development for Whoop 5.0, which will introduce blood pressure monitoring and partner with diagnostic companies, allowing users to have blood work samples done. The technology has the potential to flag worrisome symptoms and give physicians relevant information about a patient’s health.

“Speed is everything,” Luizzi explained. “That’s our competitive advantage as a product. With all of this information in one place, we can then derive insights from it in a world where before we were spending our time getting the data at all, and with that already in Snowflake, it allows us to just move that much faster.”
