Aerospike unveils native Rust client preview, targeting real-time ‘safe’ applications

Aerospike Inc., which sells a commercial version of an open-source, scalable, real-time NoSQL database management system, has released a preview version of a fully supported Rust client for developers building high-throughput, low-latency applications with the popular programming language. The client, now available on GitHub, marks what Aerospike said is a “significant shift” from a community-led effort to a production-grade library maintained by the company.

Rust has become a preferred language for performance-critical infrastructure, with adoption by organizations like Amazon.com Inc., Cloudflare Inc., and Discord Inc. Its appeal lies in its ability to deliver high performance while enforcing memory and thread safety at compile time.

The new preview “includes many of the most requested features, such as async support, advanced queries, batch operations and rack-aware policies,” Aerospike said in a statement. “It also represents the first step toward a general availability release, which will bring full customer support, feature parity with our other official clients and a long-term commitment to maintenance.”

Highlights include a new BatchOperation application program interface, improved query and scan protocols with pagination and throttling options and support for specialized features like replica selection policies and custom data types such as OrderedMap and UnorderedMap. The client also supports features like expression builders for filtering and querying (record_size(), memory_size()) and conversions between Aerospike values and Rust types.

Aerospike laid out a roadmap for general availability in 2025. The full release will aim for feature parity with the company’s other officially supported software development kits, such as those for Go, Java, and C# and will continue to be shaped by ongoing community feedback. Documentation and examples are included in the GitHub repository.
