Lucid Motors puts orchestration in the driver’s seat

Innovation in electric vehicles isn’t just about what happens under the hood. At Lucid Group Inc., the same precision and care that define its cars extend to the systems powering customer and employee experiences, with an orchestration platform now central to how those systems connect.

The company’s motto of “compromise nothing” shapes its engineering. It also guides its technology choices, according to Sanjay Chandra (pictured, left), vice president and head of global IT at Lucid Motors.

Sanjay Chandra, vice president and head of global IT at Lucid Group, talks to theCUBE about Workato’s orchestration platform at the WOW: World of Workato event.

Lucid Motor Group’s Sanjay Chandra talks with theCUBE about how Workato’s platform enables seamless experiences across systems.

“We choose best-of-breed products,” he told theCUBE. “We bring them to our employees and our customers and our partners, but it leaves us with a void, leaves us with this gap … you have all the best-of-breed products, so how do you put them all together? That’s where a product like Workato comes in.”

Chandra and Deepak Shah (right), head of integration and automation engineering at Lucid Motors, spoke with theCUBE’s Rob Strechay and Savannah Peterson at the WOW: Workato World of Workato event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how Lucid Motors partners with Workato to deliver seamless experiences across systems, accelerate operations and meet rising customer demand. (* Disclosure below.)

Scaling with the right orchestration platform

Lucid Motors’ growth has created a constant need to integrate new technologies and processes. Managing this complexity while scaling production and sales requires platforms that can keep pace, according to Chandra.

“It’s a challenging situation for us,” he said. “We’re moving at such a fast pace, and all of our systems have to keep up with it. … that’s where these tool sets, a product like Workato … easily extensible [and] can easily scale, become really pivotal. Otherwise, we just cannot operate at the pace that we need to operate at Lucid today.”

That scalability has been vital on the operational side, according to Shah. Even processing something as simple as an order can involve multiple systems, from customer-facing portals to warehouse and IT platforms. That scalability has been vital on the operational side, with Lucid Motors leaning on Workato’s orchestration platform to tie critical systems together.

“Once we started realizing the power of Workato and the velocity and agility it brings, it’s been adopted more and more into all our components and verticals,” Shah said. “Just putting an order or even getting a quote actually travels through at least six different systems. All of that is connected, integrated and orchestrated — a lot of that with Workato now.”

The payoff is more than efficiency. It’s confidence that the company can continue scaling launches such as the Gravity SUV while maintaining high service levels, according to Chandra. That confidence stems from the reliability of its orchestration platform.

“It should be there when the customer thinks of it, versus having to ask for it,” he said. “How can we self-serve the customer in ways that the customer feels like they can do what they need and transact when they want into the means that they want? Using Workato as an orchestration platform helps us help our customers [and] provide that awesome experience.”
