Webflow expands beyond design with new AI tool for building full-stack web applications

No-code website development platform company Webflow Inc. today launched App Gen, a new artificial intelligence-powered code generation experience that allows anyone, from designers to marketers to developers, to build and deploy full-stack web applications directly within Webflow.

Webflow is pitching App Gen as an expansion of its mission to give nontechnical users the ability to design and launch complex, interactive web experiences without writing code. The tool uses generative AI to transform natural-language prompts into production-ready apps that integrate with a site’s design system, content management system and brand framework, all hosted on Webflow Cloud’s enterprise-grade infrastructure.

The new App Gen offering supports fully functional applications built around existing design systems, unlike early AI site builders that stop at layout creation. The AI automatically applies site-specific typography, color and component structure for brand consistency while also leveraging structured CMS data to build dynamic, data-driven interfaces.

The result gives users the ability to create anything from pricing calculators and dashboards to job boards or location finders that stay in sync with site content.

Everything generated through App Gen inside the Webflow platform is built on Webflow’s production-grade infrastructure and can be deployed instantly to Webflow Cloud.

The integration eliminates the traditional friction between design and engineering teams by keeping design, development and hosting within a single, unified system. The approach combines AI creation, brand fidelity and scalable hosting in one system to ensure that all outputs are reliable, secure and aligned with an organization’s visual identity from the start.

Webflow has additional plans for App Gen, with planned future expansions that will include features like authentication and databases to enable even more powerful web apps to be built entirely on the platform. The additions will make it easier for teams to manage users, store data and build more complex, connected applications, all in one place.

The company is also introducing the ability to generate custom code components with AI, giving teams even more flexibility to extend and personalize their sites. The components will inherit the same structure, design intelligence and reliability that are offered by Webflow today.

App Gen is now in beta and is available on all site plans.

Webflow is a venture capital-backed startup that has raised $335 million over five rounds, including a round of $120 million on a $4 billion valuation in March 2022. Investors in the company include Y Combinator, CapitalG LP, Accel Partners LP, Silversmith Capital Partners, Draper Associates LP, Silversmith Capital Partners and Rainfall Ventures.
