Data encryption becoming the defining layer of next-gen cloud architectures

Enterprise-grade data encryption turns sensitive information into a secure, trusted asset, empowering organizations to innovate confidently without compromising security.

Vast Data Inc. is rolling out data encryption built around a multi-layered security model that protects data at rest and in transit. The design adds stronger key management, secure deletion and more precise access controls, according to Andy Pernsteiner (pictured), field chief technology officer of Vast Data.

“Our focus initially was providing a cost-effective all-flash storage platform for doing large-scale analytics and data processing,” Pernsteiner said. “We extended the platform to support enterprise-grade encryption, data protection services. We brought large-scale all-flash implementations. So, our ability to sort of morph into a company that could not only service the needs of HPC, but also the needs of the enterprise, really sort of kept bringing us forward in terms of the new ideas that we had, the features and functionalities we added.”

Pernsteiner spoke with theCUBE’s John Furrier and Jackie McGuire at SC25, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed why enterprise-grade data encryption is essential today and how Vast Data delivers it through a strong, unified and highly secure architecture. (* Disclosure below.)

Data encryption as the backbone of unified, resilient next-gen cloud platforms

Data encryption is more than a security measure — it’s a strategic enabler. Vast Data is driving this vision through its SyncEngine, which streamlines data migration, indexing and integration of external sources via advanced pipelines, delivering a unified, actionable view of the entire data estate, according to Pernsteiner.

“We developed another software product that allows customers to not only migrate data from place to place, but also to index everything where it is, so they can build a holistic picture of all of their data,” he said. “It’s called SyncEngine, and it has the ability to index and migrate data both from POSIX-related file systems as well as object stores.”

Resiliency and non-disruptive upgrades are essential in NeoCloud environments, where downtime and data loss are unacceptable amid increasingly distributed, data-intensive workloads. Vast Data delivers these guarantees through its fault-tolerant, disaggregated architecture, real-time failover and seamless rolling upgrades — enabling enterprises to scale and modernize with zero downtime and uncompromised reliability, Pernsteiner explained.

“In terms of the NeoClouds, we’re increasingly seeing them want to offer more services to their end users,” he said. “Renting GPUs by the hour is one thing, but providing service layers on top of it … I mean if you think about let’s say, CoreWeave, do they want to have to build their own block store, their own database table format? Do they want to have to create their own mechanisms for doing all these things?’ We can increase the ability for them to, or reduce the time to market.”
