Steno raises $49M to change court reporting with AI-enabled transcript analysis

Steno Agency Inc., a leader in tech-enabled court reporting and litigation support services, today announced it has raised $49 million in Series C funding to build the next generation of its artificial intelligence-enabled court transcript technology.

Savano Capital Partners led the round. Existing investors First Round Capital, The Legal Tech Fund and other strategic investors also participated.

Steno provides court reporting and legal solutions, including videography, interpreters, equipment rental, conference rooms and data management.

Its solutions are combined with an AI tool called “Transcript Genius,” a solution that reads through case transcripts to generate customized insights and save time and effort by generating summaries or indexing them for search engine-like searches. This allows attorneys to locate key testimony rapidly, reduce transcript review and build strategy.

The company said it uses its AI capability to allow legal firms to essentially interrogate transcripts like witnesses. With generative AI, transcripts become conversational. Law professionals can ask pointed questions, receive key information, identify inconsistencies and uncover crucial details in ways that might have been unlikely to notice before.

“When we released Transcript Genius, our revolutionary AI-powered transcript analysis tool, it was a game-changer for the industry, driving unprecedented user retention by solving real workflow friction,” said Chief Executive Greg Hong.

Since the company operates both as a provider and a tech company, it lives at the very heart of the legal industry where work happens. “That hybrid position allows us to build AI capabilities that software-only companies simply cannot replicate,” added Hong.

Steno bills itself as building on deep partnerships with attorneys, paralegals and court reporters. It intends to use the funding to accelerate work on the next generation of Transcript Genius, using generative AI that enables this capability for legal professionals.

The company said it has already worked to “redefine transcript analysis” with its product and launched a marketplace for court reporting professionals to manage their careers. The company also provides a secure Zoom-like service for remote depositions called Steno Connect, simplifying remote litigation.

Depositions are a formal, out-of-court proceeding in which witnesses or parties in a lawsuit give sworn testimony, which is recorded by a court reporter. It is important because it provides evidence that can be evaluated and stories that can be “locked in” before people are brought to the stand. No judge is present, just lawyers and witnesses.

The latter follows from the COVID-19 pandemic, when many courts began to take on many in-courtroom and out-of-court activities remotely, including depositions. This activity continues today for many courts across the United States because the infrastructure built to support it continues to grow.

Although the pandemic-driven spikes have stabilized, 44% of legal professionals expect usage to increase further into 2026 because of cost efficiency, time savings and scheduling flexibility.

“We’re finding new ways for lawyers to work with testimony and case data,” said Chief Operating Officer Prabhdeep Singh. “Our goal is to expand beyond simple automation, providing a unified platform where data-informed AI and expert litigation support work together to solve the complex challenges law firms face daily.”
