Enterprise AI orchestration has become the defining challenge of the agentic era — not because the models aren’t ready, but because most enterprises aren’t.
The whole software stack is being reimagined for an agentic world, and the companies that win will be those that build the right controls. That scaffolding must combine process orchestration, a governed data context layer and application intelligence that humans can trust and control, according to Michael Beckley (pictured), co-founder and chief technology officer of Appian Corp.
“There’s a great mystery about how to make AI useful for more than just prototyping. How do you actually trust it? How do you make it reliable and repeatable and deterministic so that you can trust it for missions that matter?” Beckley said. “Building that harness around AI — that’s what companies like Appian are doing, and it’s really remarkable the value that we’re able to unlock.”
Beckley spoke with theCUBE’s Dave Vellante and Alison Kosik at Appian World 2026, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed enterprise AI orchestration, Appian’s data fabric strategy and which architectural choices will define AI leaders over the next two years. (* Disclosure below.)
There’s an unmistakable reality to process-centric AI deployments: Orchestration alone is not sufficient if the underlying data is siloed, ungoverned or inaccessible to agents. Appian built its data fabric not originally for AI, but to unify enterprise data sources into a virtual, read-write layer — and that investment is now bearing out as agent deployments scale, Beckley noted.
“The value moves to the harness — how do you orchestrate different AI agents, how do you ensure that the data they have access to is correct and accurate and is in the right context — and so it’s not just the orchestration,” he said. “It’s also the context layer beneath the orchestration that the value moves into.”
Drawing a parallel to the iPhone, no single capability creates a breakthrough — it is the combination of process orchestration, data context and application awareness working together that determines success, according to Beckley. Among the announcements at Appian World 2026 is a new partnership with Snowflake Inc. that extends the data fabric’s reach by connecting directly to Snowflake Cortex AI, dramatically expanding the pool of enterprise data available to Appian-orchestrated agents.
“When you’re building on Appian, that process core keeps working — it’s our responsibility to make sure that underneath the covers, it’s still being prompted in an optimal way and that the model’s giving you the best answers,” Beckley said. “You want to have the right mix of intelligence and determinism.”
That mix demands more than good architecture, instead requiring continuous visibility into whether processes are actually delivering the outcomes enterprises expect, Beckley explained. As AI operates at a speed and scale that outpaces human oversight, real-time telemetry mapped to business KPIs becomes the difference between a deployment that holds and one that quietly drifts.
“It’s very important that you’re able to map out a process end to end, measure it and monitor to always know you’re getting the results you expect, especially at AI velocity,” Beckley said. “It’s very hard for humans to keep up.”
