Hardware manufacturer Hewlett-Packard is making something called the HP Get Virtual Guarantee Program available to global customers, promising to double VM density in environments that meet all the specified criteria.
To be eligible for the program a company needs to be upgrading to a 3PAR storage system with the HP 3PAR Optimization Suite, and must run VMware vSphere 4.1 or higher on the new infrastructure. In the center of HP’s newest sales initiative is a guarantee that states it will provide the disk capacity, support and software needed to achieve the x2 performance boost if it’s not reached otherwise.
Here’s an excerpt from a case study from one client that decided to swap its legacy storage with a VMware-powered 3PAR cloud:
“We needed to significantly boost capacity without adding to the physical or administrative footprint of our virtual server environment,” said Gary Collins, founder and director at Intercept, a hosting service provider. “HP 3PAR Storage was the only system that allowed us to support twice as many virtual machines on each of our physical servers while meeting all of our data center upgrade goals.”
Cloud adoption in the enterprise is stronger than ever these days, and vendors are cashing in. Barriers such as security and data integrity are gradually starting to be substituted by second tier priorities, mainly the matter of finding the biggest bang for the buck. This emphasis on data center efficiency is driving other projects as well, such as Facebook’s Open Compute Project, which HP joined today.
Hewlett-Packard is keeping things open. Last month the company upgraded its largest VirtualSystem option – the new configuration can be virtualized by both vSphere and Hyper-V, packs 3PAR storage and supports System Center 2012. Word of the VS3 overhaul was sent out at the gathering where the latest version of Microsoft’s hypervisor management platform was debuted.
