VMware Cloud Gets an Upgrade with Socialcast, View and Project Octopus

VMware has been upping its cloud game by launching one initiative after another in recent weeks, and it all adds up to some notable developments in the enterprise space.

Today VMware reveals the fruits of its labor with the integration of Socialcast, the social enterprise company it acquired May of last year.  Socialcast’s core technology has been tied into Lithium’s social customer suite and now has several things in common with Salesforce, with the exception of a more apparent emphasis on collaboration among employees.

Socialcast will be connected to Lithium via its native APIs and the Reach integration tool.

“While we see social technologies changing the way business is done, there’s a significant difference between internal and external networks,” said Tim Young, vice president, Social Enterprise, VMware. “By collaborating with Lithium, we’re able to intelligently integrate two best-of-breed solutions to provide a better connection between external communities and internal networks. Ultimately companies will be able to make better decisions based on this new way of working.”

The second tidbit from VMware is that View v5.1 launched this week, introducing a few important new functions. The updated desktop virtualization app now supports the PCoIP protocol, and allows capacity to be provisioned more dynamically using an offloading feature called VMware View Storage Accelerator.

In addition, USB connectivity has been enhanced, RADIUS authentication has been added and most importantly, mobile devices can now be plugged into environments powered by View.

The update covers not only the application itself but also the revolving software portfolio – integration with Horizon Application Manager and Project Octopus is something that the End-User Computing lineup will include as well.

Octopus is the more interesting one of the two, mostly due to the fact that it launched yesterday.
