HP Cloud Services Now Covers DB-as-a-Service, Too

Hewlett-Packard is obviously doing something right, given the impressive number of third party developers that announced integration with HP Cloud Services yesterday, when the newest challenger to AWS’s throne entered public beta.

Among those companies is EnterpriseDB, a database firm that is now offering its PostgreSQL  DBaaS via HP Cloud Services. Postgres Plus Cloud Database was rolled out just a few months ago and even back then EnterpriseDB had its money on HP, with the difference being that now the company may finally start seeing the return on its investment.

PPCD gives devs a web-based database to fiddle around with using a simplistic point-and-click interface, through which scaling, load balancing, failover and backup can all be managed. Such an instance can be moved around between the HP public cloud and on-premise deployments.

“Information technology planners need to include cloud computing in all new decisions, if only to embark upon an early project to develop that expertise,” said Donald Feinberg, Vice President and analyst at Gartner. “The database management system (DBMS) represents a significant opportunity as solutions have emerged with provisions for elasticity and scalability and the ability to integrate with other cloud services, all of which are what sets apart the true cloud DBMS from one that is simply a hosted service.”

A number of different vendors are exploring new ways to allow their customers to make more use of their data, and this trend is not limited to the cloud. A couple days ago Zettaset and Hyve announced that they’re working on Linux based Hadoop solution that leverages Zettaset Orchestrator and runs on custom boxes from Hyve.

Earlier, HortonWorks partnered up with Kognitio to combine the latter’s fast data processing technology together with the big data analytics engine.
