SAP co-CEO Jim Snabe disclosed some of the new features that will be available with an upcoming release of its Sybase Unwired Platform, set to launch at the SAP SAPphire conference in Madrid a couple months from now.
Snabe outlines a strong emphasis on customization with the latest version, an increasingly vital component now that BYOD is seeing rapid adoption across a growing number of verticals.
The next version of Unwired will ship with tools that will enable developers to create their own applications, and make them available through their company’s Sybase-powered corporate app store.
In addition, Snabe talked about project Neo – a cloud-based development environment that will enable to “customize the look and feel of SAP applications,” for smartphones and tablets as well as PCs. “The next wave will be an expansion of mobile apps for business,” said Snabe. “The key is to open up.”
By the sounds of it, the company is looking to kill two birds with one stone: by opening up the platform SAP delegates the task of optimizing its BI apps for a specific platform to the user, while at the same time enabling clients and partners to re-brand its software.
The bring-your-own-device trend is becoming a huge market. Enterprises are paying for software that helps them manage employee devices, roll out content and most importantly, secure the data on those phones. Cisco recently addressed this with the debut of several new enterprise security solutions, including the latest version of Cisco Security Manager 4.3, and AnyConnect 3.1. The former is a centralized interface for managing all of the company’s security products, and AnyConnect is Cisco’s remote access platform for mobile devices.
