On today’s SiliconANGLE’s Live NewsDesk Show, (see embed feed below or visit youtube.com/siliconangle to watch on-demand), we get an insider’s perspective on Android’s long-term goals. Newly announced Android head Sundar Pichai speaks out for the first time, sitting down with WIRED in his first public interview since his appointment. Pichai’s interview was full of template Google responses, but there were a few golden nuggets worth noting.
Pichai’s interview was pretty template Google responses, but there were a few small nuggets. When questioned if he thought having two operating systems (Chrome & Android) Pichai was confusing, he said that users care about applications and services they use, not operating systems. Very few people will ask you, “Hey, how come MacBooks are on Mac OS-X and iPhone and iPad are on iOS? Why is this?”
Pichai also explained not to expect many new launches of new products at this year’s Google I/O, but to expect all kinds of things Google and Android are doing for their developers. One of those things is Google Play games, which was recently leaked. In unpacking Google Play games there are all sorts of factual hints at multiplayer functionality, leaderboards, achievements, and even cloud game saves too.
Joining us now to tell us more about Sundar Pichai’s first interview, Android, and his expectations for Google I/O this week is SiliconANGLE’s Contributing Editor John Casaretto. (See the live broadcast, embed below ~ if you missed today’s topic, check our YouTube channel for archived clips.)
Some of the things we’ll be discussing with Casaretto include, Pichai’s thoughts on the coexistence of Chrome & Android, Android’s biggest challenges moving forward, and Android’s relationship with the new Facebook Home.
