Asus announced a number of products at Computex 2013 in Taiwan this week, and it seems like Asus now has a product to meet any of your smart-device needs.

To start, there’s a six-inch phablet, the FonePad Note, a revamped version of the Nexus 7 – Memo Pad HD7, a new Transformer Pad Infinity with a 2560 x 1600 display, and the Zenbook Infinity that features a Gorilla Glass 3 lid, touchscreen and backlit keyboard.

The Zenbook Infinity is getting a lot of attention because of the Gorilla Glass 3 lid, but this isn’t the first device to use Gorilla Glass on its lid.  Also at Computex 2013, Acer announced the Aspire S7 –  an Ultrabook with a touchscreen that features Gorilla Glass 2, as well as the Aspire S3 which is a step down from the S7 but still features a Gorilla Glass 2 lid.

So is a Gorilla Glass lid the new trend in Ultrabooks, and will it boost sales in a dying PC market?

“I think what they’re trying to do is showcase some of the latest generation of technology to give them an edge, and certainly a lot of people are pointing out the struggling market for PC makers.  A lot of these are based in Taiwan and we see a lot of these companies competing.  This new generation of ultrathin laptops that are being presented… they want to tap [into] this expanding tablet market.  They’re trying to compensate for declining computer sales all the way across the board,” Casaretto stated.

As for the Zenbook Infinity and Aspire S7, which of the two Ultrabooks will grab the attention of consumers?

Zenbook Infinity

Asus hasn’t officially unveiled the tech sheet of the Zenbook Infinity, but from sources who have handled the device first hand, states that it features a 13.3-inch screen, two USB 3.0 ports, a mini HDMI port, mini DisplayPort (no Thunderbolt), headphone jack, an SD card reader, about 15.5mm thick,  a possible 2560 x 1440 display panel, 28W dual-core Haswell part with GT3 graphics, otherwise known as Iris 5100, and of course the Gorilla Glass 3 used for the lid, palmrest and trackpad.

Aspire S7

The S7 features a RAID SSD 0 storage in 128GB or 256GB capacities with 8GB of memory, dimensions of 323.3 x 223.5 x 12.9mm, and weighs 1.3kg,  Intel’s HD 5000 integrated graphics, battery life lasts up to seven hours, has an aluminum body casing with Gorilla Galss 2 treatment, a 13.3-inch screen that uses an In-Plane-Switching (IPS) panel with a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, 2 USB 3.0 ports, an SD card slot, HDMI port, mini display port, TwinAir cooling technology for “whisper quiet” cooling and runs Windows 8.  The device will be available in July or August for S$1,399.

We can’t conclude yet as to which of the Ultrabooks is better since the Zenbook Inifinity’s features haven’t been released, but based on the physical aspects, the Zenbook Infinity looks pretty good, carrying an air of toughness to it.  Hopefully the price won’t go higher than the Aspire S7.
