New York’s Attorney General and San Francisco’s District Attorney have teamed up to announce an initiative to push the technology industry to develop technologies aimed at reducing smartphone thefts. Joining us now to provide his breaking analysis on this new initiative is SiliconANGLE Contributing Editor John Casaretto (see live broadcast below).
According to the FCC, cellphone thefts account for roughly 40 percent of all robberies nationwide, with 113 smartphones lost or stolen each minute in the US. Yesterday afternoon a meeting was held with representatives from Apple, Samsung, Google’s Motorola unit and Microsoft to explain the initiative.
The new organization, called the Secure Our Smartphones Initiative, will include prosecutors, political officials, law enforcement and consumer advocates from about a dozen states across the US. The co-chairmen will be the New York attorney general, Eric T. Schneiderman, and the San Francisco district attorney, George Gascón.
The group comes days after Apple revealed an iOS software update, Activation Lock, that offers more security to mobile users, reiterating the growing demand for improved, built-in protection for devices. Security has been an issue at the forefront of enterprise device use, and its concepts and technology are making their way into the consumer market. Will the added pressure from the Secure Our Smartphones Initiative put more requirements on manufacturers? See the video below for Casaretto’s thoughts on the program, its potential impact and effectiveness.
