Apple Ripe for Harvest : Will iPhone 5 Mini + New Device Sizes Launch in September?

It seems the world’s been pretty quiet lately regarding its expectations of what the next iPhone will be like.  It’s not that we’re no longer interested in the device, but we’ve taken a break in light of Apple’s recently concluded WWDC, where no new iPhone made an appearance, and bubbling expectations over the iWatch, a term for which Apple recently filed for trademark despite no news of an actual product.  And we’ve been gathering evidence as to what Apple will be offering come fall of this year.

Nevertheless, autumn approaches and the season is ripe for an Apple harvest, historically speaking.  Here’s a recap of the latest rumors for new Apple devices we could see this fall.

Apple tends to release new software for its mobile and PC offerings, and new devices, usually Macs, in June, while waiting until September to release a brand new product.  A couple or so weeks after that, the device hits stores.  It’s a cycle Apple’s unlikely to break, especially if it wants to keep up with Samsung, a rival relentless in releasing iteration after iteration of its flagship phone, the Galaxy S4.

iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 or iPhone mini?

There’s still a debate as to whether Apple will be releasing a newer version of the iPhone 5 that’s updated with new features that would go well with the new iOS 7.  The rumored iPhone 5S, much like the iPhone 4S, will look a lot like the original but has been pimped.  Others are suggesting that Apple will be releasing three devices come September – a phablet, a smaller version of the iPhone 5, then a cheaper version of the iPhone 5.

Rumors of a cheaper iPhone have been around for ages but we have yet to see a more affordable sibling of the iPhone since it was first released.  Earlier this year, the Wall Street Journal revived the rumor, stating that the cheaper iPhone would resemble the original iPhone 5 except it would be less powerful because it will use less expensive components.  Newer rumors suggest that the cheaper iPhones will sport a plastic casing and will be available in vibrant colors, like a fusion between the iPhone 5, the iPod Touch 5th generation and the iPod classic.  It may sound like Apple is backtracking instead of moving forward but this may help them gain more users – those same users Apple lost to Samsung or other Android OEMs known for affordable iPhone alternatives.

As for the two other iPhones, those will comprise the iPhone phablet and the iPhone mini.  One will sport a  5.7-inch screen and the other will feature a 4.7-inch screen.  Both will allegedly sport a metallic unibody or a glass body, much like the iPhone 5.

Rumored features

The iPhone 5S or 6, whatever you wish to believe, is rumored to sport a larger-capacity battery, a new dual-LED rear-camera flash, a 12MP camera, a fingerprint scanner, and Retina+ Sharp IGZO display with 1080p Full HD resolution.

Trade-in program

To facilitate faster consumer adaption for the next iPhone, Apple is said to be launching a new trade-in program which would allow consumers to trade in their old iPhones, get cash back or pay only a small added amount to purchase the newer model.  The repurchased iPhone will be refurbished and sold to emerging markets at a cheaper price.

iWatch

Another Apple product people eagerly awaiting is the rumored iWatch.  It seems that the device is no longer a rumor and we may soon see it in Apple Stores, as the Cupertino company recently filed a trademark patent in Japan for the name “iWatch.”  Apple has also filed trademarks in Russia, Mexico, Taiwan, Turkey and Colombia.

OEMs are scrambling to be the first to release a smartwatch, a watch that would not only give you the time and date, but act as a second screen for your smartphone as well.  As SiliconANGLE Contributing Editor John Casaretto puts it, wearable technology is the next frontier and the industry has been looking for a device that could take the smartphone wars to the next level.
