LIVE: House Limit on NSA Sparks National Cybersecurity Discussion

Updated with full video – see below.

Welcome to NewsDesk on SiliconANGLE TV for Wednesday July 24, 2013. The fallout from Edward Snowden’s disclosures of top-secret government surveillance programs has reached the floor of the U.S. House in a debate over proposals to restrict the National Security Agency. Joining us now to break-down the proposals and how things have played out on the House floor is SiliconANGLE Contributing Editor John Casaretto.

See live feed below or visit youtube.com/siliconangle to watch on-demand.

In what some are calling a terse statement late Tuesday evening, the White House blasted the so-called “Amash Amendment” that would limit the National Security Agency’s ability to collect data on personal phone communications, calling the program crucial to national security.

Press Secretary Jay Carney was quoted as saying, “We urge the House to reject the Amash Amendment, and instead move forward with an approach that appropriately takes into account the need for a reasoned review of what tools can best secure the nation.”

On today’s episode of NewsDesk with Kristin Feledy, we will be speaking with our very own security expert John Casaretto, who will give us his interpretation of what the amendment entails, and if it’s an effective and ethical way to deal with the complicated issue of national cybersecurity.

We will also be sure to ask him what other defense measures the nation could take, and he’ll inform us as to whether or not some efforts to stop cybercrime are ineffective, or politically damaging, such as the current NSA security model.
