Weekly Cloud Review: On-Demand Hybrid Hosting and APIs

As data volumes continue to grow, the hybrid cloud becomes an increasingly attractive proposition for enterprises. Integrating on- and off-premise infrastructure enables CIOs to safeguard sensitive information behind the firewall while taking full advantage of the affordability and flexibility of the public cloud. But with most hybrid platforms, provisioning resources, enforcing policies and managing data across disparate IT environments is much easier said than done.

Emil Sayegh‘s Codero is tackling this challenge with a new offering called On-Demand Hybrid Cloud Hosting. The solution lets customers run dedicated servers and cloud systems behind a highly configurable private network that automates administration with a click-and-drop interface.

Over in the public cloud, Amazon is trying to defend its dominant position in the infrastructure-as-a-service market. Reflecting on the company’s better-than-expected third quarter financial results, founding CEO Jeff Bezos disclosed that “in the last 90 days, AWS team got back to work on a big government contract.” He discussed other milestones as well, including product launches and operational achievements.

“We brought 8 million square feet of fulfillment center capacity online, deployed 1,382 Kiva robots in three FCs, provided a new venue for artists to reach customers, signed up millions of new Prime members, announced Kindle MatchBook, Login & Pay, and nine new original TV pilots,” the executive revealed.

NetApp has also kept itself busy with an aggressive partnering strategy that underscores its recently announced plans to establish Data ONTAP as a universal platform for the cloud. The storage vendor joined forces with the Texas-based LiveIT Consulting Group to make ONTAP more accessible for local companies, and allied with Verizon to make the OS available for its users. Thanks to the partnership, the carrier’s cloud customers will be able to deploy ONTAP as a resource-efficient VSA.
